SUMMARY:The 7 Fingers—Duel Reality
DESCRIPTION:If we could defy gravity\, could we escape the tragic pull of fate? In a world spinning out of control\, is the power of love strong enough for us to hold on to reality? \nCreated by The 7 Fingers (Les 7 Doigts)\, a collective of world-class artists based in Quebec\, Canada\, Duel Reality is a bold and electrifying fusion of the contemporary circus and theatre arts. After captivating audiences in 2018 with Bosch Dreams\, a surreal collaboration with Denmark’s Theatre Republique\, it now takes on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—but not as you’ve ever seen it before. \nThis is Shakespeare re-imagined through acrobatics: a high-octane\, emotionally charged spectacle where timeless themes of love and rivalry are played out in midair. Think red versus blue\, family feuds turned into physical showdowns. Featuring the diabolo\, juggling\, Chinese poles\, teeterboards\, hula hoops—each act is a strategic move in a poetic battle of hearts. \nPerformers weave the Shakespearean dialogue into their choreography\, every gesture packed with drama and wit. Expect breathtaking flips\, daring aerial stunts\, and moments of romantic beauty. No words are needed—body language becomes the ultimate storyteller\, capturing the complexity of human emotion and connection. \nSet to a dynamic soundtrack blending classical music\, jazz and pulsing beats\, this is a circus unlike anything you’ve ever seen: visceral\, elegant and moving. A love story told through motion\, where every leap is a risk\, and every landing a triumph. \nMeet-the-Artist session will be held after the performance on 21 Mar (Sat). \n20 Mar 20:00\n21-22 Mar 15:00\nApprox. 1 hr 10 mins with no interval

SUMMARY:300 Years of Cantonese Opera: Transition
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Wu Zixu is a two-part historical epic written and directed by Cantonese opera icon Yuen Siu-fai. The play recounts the extraordinary life of Wu Zixu—a noble official of the Spring and Autumn period in ancient China. After Wu’s father and brother are brutally executed\, Wu goes into exile before rising to power in a rival state. But his loyalty to his lord eventually leads to his downfall at the hands of the state’s successor. \nWhile romantic tales dominate Cantonese opera\, The Story of Wu Zixu features spectacular fighting scenes as well as deeply affecting drama and intricate characterisation. The result is an exciting blend of stylised martial arts\, poetic dialogue and superb acting\, making the work both a visual and emotional tour de force. \nOriginally staged years ago and long since unseen\, Wu Zixu has been carefully re-staged with updated sets and costumes. The production design blends the abstract simplicity of Cantonese opera (the classic “one table\, two chairs” staging) with modern theatrical aesthetics\, offering a visually striking experience for contemporary audiences. \nThe programme also features a curated selection of zhezixi (operatic excerpts) from classics during the golden age of Cantonese opera. Composed by some of the most well-known playwrights\, these excerpts spotlight the skill\, range and expressive grace of Cantonese opera. Ranging from romantic duets to action-filled martial arts scenes\, the highlights include Dream of The Peony Pavilion\, Murder in the Oratory and War Cape of Rouge and Blood. In particular\, renowned Cantonese opera star Nam Fung will join Yuen Siu-fai in A Mismatched Couple\, a stellar line-up not to be missed! \n2026.03.13\nThe Story of Wu Zixu (Part One)\n19:30\nApprox. 3hrs 15mins incl. one interval \n2026.03.14\nThe Story of Wu Zixu (Part Two)\n19:30\nApprox. 3hrs 15mins incl. one interval \n2026.03.15\nSelected Excerpts\n14:30\nApprox. 3hrs 15mins incl. one interval

Every dance move responds to every musical note\, as performers create sonic shapes out of thin air. Dance captures tranquillity as silence between drumbeats contains the music of myriad things. \nFollowing the success of Myth of the Dancing Durumi\, HKDance once again presents Professor Jin Yinghua’s dance piece Changgo Dance\, which is a folk dance of the Chaoxian peasants of Northeast China. Scenes of young Chaoxian ladies playing the Changgo drum convey the togetherness and passion of the Chaoxian people. \nHKDance Principal Dancer\, Hua Chi-yu\, for the first time has created an original dance piece for the company: Transient Radiance. Dancers’ long sleeves evoke drumsticks\, gracefully sweeping through the air to create beautiful linear silhouettes and powerful resonant drumbeats. SUMMARY:Awakening Lion
DESCRIPTION:The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has invited the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre to perform in October its grand Chinese dance drama “Awakening Lion”\, a production that won the Lotus Award\, China’s highest award for dance. Set against the backdrop of the Sanyuanli Anti-British Uprising in Guangzhou during the Opium War\, the lion dancers of the day look back at their predecessors and retrace the history of a century ago\, showcasing the inheritance of national spirit that has been passed down through generations\, and allowing the audience to experience the charm of Lingnan culture. The programme is part of the 4th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival and the Guangzhou Culture Week. \nThe “Awakening Lion” is the first dance drama on the Mainland featuring Guangdong lion dancing\, a representative item of the national intangible cultural heritage. With “awakening” as its spirit and “lion” as its form\, the production reflects the awakening of Chinese national identity. It depicts two teenage lion dancers who achieve self-awakening and growth while making various life decisions involving the emotional dynamics and the righteous cause of the nation. In terms of artistic style\, the dance drama shows strong characteristics of South China and indigenous features of old Canton. By integrating innovative elements and multimedia technology\, together with music and costumes rich in regional characteristics\, the staging exudes both modern appeal and visual impact. \nIn terms of choreography\, “Awakening Lion” is a fusion of Chinese dance and traditional lion dance. It incorporates the stances of Nanquan (southern-style boxing) and the difficult movements of southern lion dance\, such as falling forward\, tumbling\, leaping and “picking the greens”\, into its dance vocabulary. It also blends various southern Guangdong intangible cultural heritages elements\, such as Nanquan\, Choy Li Fut-style martial arts\, wooden fish songs\, Yingge dance and big head buddha\, to fully realise the creative transformation and innovative inheritance of outstanding traditional culture\, and to demonstrate the culture of Lingnan and the spirit of the Bay Area. The production has won the 11th China Dance Lotus Award for Dance Drama and the 11th Five One Project Award. Since its premiere in 2018\, it has toured the Mainland\, giving over 250 performances\, and has been well received by audiences. This time\, principal dancers of the Theatre\, Iliwan Umar\, Pang Guanyu\, Liang Qiqi\, Li Ao and more\, will participate in the Hong Kong performances. \nThe story is about an impoverished boy\, Xing\, and a wealthy young man\, Long\, who are preparing for a lion dance competition in the Sanyuanli village of Guangzhou. One day\, they have a fight in a teahouse. Xing wins by a narrow margin\, and Long is not convinced. Long’s sister\, Feng’er\, is secretly in love with Xing\, while Xing’s mother is against her son’s participation in the lion dance competition. On the day of the competition\, the invaders attack the Guangzhou city. Putting aside their grudges\, Xing and Long join together with the villagers to fight against the foreign enemies. \nThe Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre\, formerly known as the Guangzhou Song and Dance Troupe\, was founded in 1965. The Theatre upholds the development philosophy of “repertoire as basics\, talent as drive\, and market as booster”\, and has created a number of masterpieces\, including the dance drama “Awakening Lion”\, “Loong”\, “Yingge”\, “Xinghai．Yellow River” and dance epic “Guangzhou in the Old Days”\, etc. It has won numerous top awards\, and has received attention and praise from all walks of life. \n26 October\, 8pm (Saturday) and 27 October\, 3pm

SUMMARY:Princess Wencheng
DESCRIPTION:The New Cantonese Opera “Princess Wencheng” by Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theatre Company will be staged at the Sha Tin Town Hall in Hong Kong in October. Featuring a star-studded lineup of virtuosi\, the opera reshapes the legendary life of this iconic woman to praise her commitment to values and her love for her family and country\, demonstrating the unity and solidarity of the country’s ethnic groups and the inheritance of national spirit through generations. The programme is part of the 4th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival and the Guangzhou Culture Week. \nThe New Cantonese Opera “Princess Wencheng” is an epic opera based on the history of Princess Wencheng’s marriage to the King of Ancient Tibet in the Tang dynasty. Unlike the traditional melancholic image of a princess in a political marriage\, the play portrays Princess Wencheng as an intelligent\, playful\, courageous and responsible woman. It also captures the unwavering commitment to her values\, relentless pursuit of ideals\, and chosen path in life\, paving the way for establishing a new era in Han-Tibetan relations. \nOn the basis of inheriting and promoting Cantonese opera\, the music of the play integrates the melodies from the Tang dynasty\, and with Tibetan\, Buddhist and modern elements. Through spectacular and elegant stage design\, lighting\, and costumes reflecting both Han and Tibetan styles\, the audience will be able to experience the prosperous atmosphere of ancient Tang and the beauty of national harmony from a thousand years ago. \nThe production will also feature an impressive lineup of outstanding artists. Among them\, Li Jiayi\, who portrays Princess Wencheng from the age of 15 to 55 and with roles ranging from xiaosheng (young male)\, huadan (female lead)\, daomadan (female warrior)\, qingyi (virtuous female) to laodan (old woman)\, has won the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award for this play. Other performers include two-time recipient of the Plum Blossom Award Ou Kaiming\, who plays the role of Songtsen Gampo\, and Plum Blossom Award winners Li Junsheng and Chen Yunhong\, who portray Tang Hao and Madam Li respectively. More than 100 performers and backstage staff from the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theatre Company will participate in the performances. \nThe play tells the story of Li Xueyan\, who is designated as Princess Wencheng and sent to marry in the distant land of Tǔfān (or Great Tibet). Though torn by internal turmoil\, she accepts her fate\, viewing it as her duty to serve her country\, and sets off for her new home far away without qualms. On her journey\, she has an accident near a cliff but is saved by the King of Ancient Tibet Songtsen Gampo\, who has come to welcome his bride. It is love at first sight. Despite facing numerous trials and enduring severe challenges to her familial ties\, love\, loyalty to her country and even her own life\, Princess Wencheng overcomes them all with a benevolent heart\, wisdom\, and courage. She devotes 40 years of her life to assisting her husband in governing the country. She also becomes a close friend of Ancient Tibet’s Tang Hao\, fostering cultural exchange and integration between the peoples of Han and Ancient Tibet. \nThe Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theatre Company was established as the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Workshop in 1953 through the merger of the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe and the Guangzhou Hongdou Cantonese Opera Troupe. The troupe’s notable productions include “Guan Hanqing”\, “The Crafty Princess and Her Reckless Husband\, and “Revolution Comes to the Mountain Villages”. Upholding the principles of “Preservation\, Reform\, Innovation\, and Development”\, the troupe is dedicated to grooming talents and staging outstanding productions as its core mission. With these principles\, it steadfastly moves along the path of sustainable development for the Chinese opera art form\, exploring scientific and modern practices\, and strives to promote this rich art of South China.

SUMMARY:Sliding into Heart
DESCRIPTION:The annual dance theatre for families by City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) will once again return this August\, presenting to family audiences a contemporary dance performance that resonates with local culture. This year\, CCDC features the household name ‘Siu Ming’ as the protagonist in Sliding into Heart\, taking the audience on a mysterious journey inside kids’ imagination\, while embarking on an ‘extra-ordinary’ adventure related to growing up. \nSliding into Heart is one of the programmes of the International Arts Carnival 2024 and will bring four performances from 9 to 11 August 2024\, at Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium. \nChildhood Toys and Games Turns into Surprising Stage Elements  \nKids and Adults to Seek Oneself in a Dance Wonderland of Imagination \nSliding into Heart tells a story from the perspective of the protagonist ‘Siu Ming’\, leading the audience to slide between a world of imagination and of reality\, reflecting on different experiences in life: moments of happiness\, the unknown\, loneliness\, being lost\, and the chase for something… The narration starts with ‘Siu Ming’ unpacking the toy box by himself\, and through his journey of moving abroad\, the audience will be taken through the various essential stages and memories while growing up. \nChoreographed and directed by CCDC Resident Rehearsal Mistress Shirley Lok and co-choreographed by CCDC Teaching Artist Peggy Lam\, the performance incorporates everyday objects and childhood toys and games as stage elements\, together with awe-inspiring set design and captivating projections. CCDC dancers will dance alongside nearly 30 young dancers aged 6 to 12\, immersing themselves in Siu Ming’s imaginative world with contemporary dance. \nBut here comes the question\, who is ‘Siu Ming’? What is the game of ‘Siu Ming Siu Ming Siu Siu Ming’? These familiar figures and childhood games to parents are now likely unknown to children nowadays. The creative inspiration of the performance comes from choreographer Shirley’s daily experiences with her child. As a young mother\, she is often inspired and has gained valuable insights from her parental journey: “Children’s out-of-the-box ideas and childlike values actually have a lot for adults to learn from. I hope both parents and children who come watch the show will be moved by the dancers on stage and have their own ‘Lost & Found’ journey.” \nChildren and Adults Co-creating Contemporary Dance Moves \nExperiencing ‘in-the-moment’ Happiness \nAs in previous years\, with the purpose of nurturing children’s passion for dance from a young age\, CCDC has auditioned and invited a group of gifted young dancers to undergo professional rehearsals and join CCDC dancers to perform on stage. Hoping to create content that resonates with children\, the creative team of Sliding into Heart invited young dancers in the early rehearsal stages to share their childhood memories through writing\, drawing\, and making clay models; which will be transformed into show elements on stage to create a moving journey for the audience. \nTwo pre-show activities designed with child perspectives were also held for Sliding into Heart\, namely ‘Mommy Daddy Will You Move Like Me’ Movement Workshop and ‘A Playground for YOU’ Model Construction Workshop. Through fun parent-child interactions\, the workshops inspire family participants to be more empathetic towards one another and encourage parents to look at the world from kids’ perspectives\, while preparing them for the trip into Siu Ming’s realm of imagination in the theatre.  \n9.8.2024 [Fri] 8pm\n10.8.2024 [Sat] 3pm\, 8pm\n11.8.2024 [Sun] 3pm

SUMMARY:Five Stars Rising in the East
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Chinese Culture Festival (CCF)\, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)\, will stage the award-winning dance drama “Five Stars Rising in the East” by the Beijing Dance Drama and Opera as the opening programme in early June. Centering on a cultural relic\, the dance drama ingeniously merges Chinese aesthetics and the flavour of Western regions through innovative dance languages. The troupe takes the profound cultural connotation of the precious relic – an ancient brocade armguard – and 1 000 years of exchanges and integration of Chinese culture that shine on stage\, demonstrating a deeper sense of cultural confidence. \nThe dance drama was inspired by a piece of a Han dynasty brocade armguard unearthed in 1995 from an archaeological tomb at the Niya cultural relics site in Hotan Prefecture\, at the ancient Silk Roads in Xinjiang. It is embroidered with Chinese characters in seal script that literally translate as “five stars rising in the East are auspicious signs for the Central Plain”. The colours of the brocade are still bright after thousands of years\, and it is now a National Class One Cultural Relic. \nThe dance drama begins with the discovery of the brocade armguard at the archaeological site\, as if a door to the past has been opened from the golden sand that tells the story behind the brocade; a Han dynasty general stationed at the Western border\, Feng\, and the son of the leader of the Northern State\, Jiante\, get caught in a sandstorm. They are rescued by a monk who brings them into the ancient city of Jingjue\, where they meet Chunjun\, the daughter of the city leader. Despite an initial animosity that leads to conflicts\, the three eventually form a deep friendship. The brocade armguard that Feng left behind serves as a reminder of his duties to his land\, and bears witness to his friendship with the people of the Western regions. It represents an ideal that all ethnic groups “cluster together like pomegranate seeds”\, forming a sense of community for Chinese nation. \nThe innovative approach of the dance choreography in this production has incorporated various types of dances that showcase the colourful ethnic cultures. For example\, the lantern dance in Jingjue city is infused with the Western regions’ style. The group dance in the market is a mix of modern and tap dance\, while the excerpt “Embroidery” is presented in a Han-Tang style classical dance. With distinctive characters\, compact plot lines\, as well as humorous styles\, the dance drama has been performed nearly 100 times since its premiere in 2021\, and has won the 16th Five One Project Award and the 17th Wenhua Grand Award. Excerpts such as “Embroidery”\, “Lantern Dance” and “Market Dance” were featured in a number of programmes on the Mainland\, including last year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala\, and has received high acclaim. \nEstablished in 1978\, the Beijing Dance Drama and Opera is under the Beijing Performance and Arts Group as one of its nine performing arts companies. It is also the only professional performing group that specialises in song and dance performances under the administration of the Beijing Municipal Government. It has produced many award-winning productions including dance dramas “The Way to the Sky” and “Five Stars Rising in the East”. It has also been invited to participate in various cultural exchange events and other large-scale performing activities at home and abroad\, and has performed in more than 30 countries and regions. \nThe programme “Five Stars Rising in the East” will also feature a session under the “Chinese Culture for All: A Special Performance Series”. An open rehearsal of the dance drama will be held at 2.15pm on June 7 at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall with free admission for local primary and secondary school students to encourage them to participate in cultural activities and experience the wonders of Chinese culture and arts.
SUMMARY:Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili
DESCRIPTION:After a nine-year hiatus\, internationally acclaimed Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili is returning to Hong Kong upon the invitation of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to perform at the Sha Tin Town Hall on May 31 and June 1 (Friday and Saturday). Dressed in dazzling traditional folk costumes\, the dancers will showcase the customs and profound cultural heritage of Georgia through their extraordinary dancing techniques with a blend of classical and contemporary elements. \nGeorgian dance has distinctive characteristics. Male dancers will perform complicated movements such as point works\, fast-paced spins\, squat jumps\, stomps and more with dexterity and fierce passion. They are in stark contrast to the soft and elegant dance of female dancers\, featuring graceful glides and refined hand movements\, which will make the whole performance a fine blending of strength and delicateness. The choreography of this performance also offers a superb combination of traditional Georgian dancing and modern dance elements. There will be dancers competing against others and captivating choreographed formations\, together with stage lighting effects\, gorgeous costumes and exciting live folk music. Audiences will be able to feel the passion and charm – both classic and innovative – of the Georgian people. \nThe Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili was founded in 1945 by eminent dancers Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili. It is the first professional national dance company in Georgia\, and is committed to preserving the traditions of Georgian folk dance. Iliko Sukhishvili Jr and Nino Sukhishvili\, third-generation family members\, continue their family’s artistic vision by blending folk\, classical and modern elements into the choreography and presenting various facets of Georgian culture for audiences. The company has been highly appreciated by audiences\, and has performed in nearly 100 countries and regions\, staging over 10\,000 performances.

SUMMARY:Dance of Celestial Rhythms
DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) is kicking off its new Dance Season with Grand Dance Poem\, A Dance of Celestial Rhythms\, in September 2023. Choreographed by Artistic Director Yang Yuntao\, this splendid opening performance is about to captivate the audience with stunning visuals\, inspiring music\, state-of-the-art lighting effects and an atmospheric olfactory experience; moving through the natural cycles of time and life\, and ultimately gaining a vivid understanding of the nature. \nMultisensory experience \nThe “Twenty-Four Solar Terms”\, inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, is not only an important aspect of traditional Chinese culture and wisdom\, but is also closely related to the necessities of life. “Our mission with this new work goes far beyond the solar terms themselves. We want to reflect on the various aspects of modern life by drawing on ancient wisdom. Metaphysically speaking\, it is both a tribute to the natural world around us and a call for its protection\,” Yang says. \nIn presenting the work\, HKDC has invited various Asian designers from different disciplines to collaborate with local artists\, in addition to an exceptional fragrance experience to be sponsored by Aēsop\, aiming to arouse the audience’s visual\, auditory and olfactory senses. Through the HKDC dancers’ virtuosity\, the audience is encouraged to delight in each of the solar terms\, essentially\, to get back in touch with nature – with the seasonal changes that unfold around us all the time and that we have a tendency to ignore. \n29-30.9.2023 (Fri – Sat) 7:45pm\n30.9-1.10.2023 (Sat -Sun) 3:00pm \nProgramme Plus\nA Dance of Celestial Rhythms X 2023/24 Dance Season Programme Parade \nA public preview of three amazing excerpts from A Dance of Celestial Rhythms: “Clear and Bright”\, ”White Dew” and “Grain in Ear” & “Major Heat”\, as well as the highlights from the new dance season.\nDate & Time 9 Sept 2023 (Sat) 4:00PM\nVenue Plaza\, Sha Tin Town Hall\nGuest Host Mr Anthony Ho \nFeatured Exhibition\nDate 11-24 Sept 2023\nVenue Foyer\, Hong Kong Cultural Centre \nOpen Rehearsal．Tea Tasting Workshop．Dance Masterclass\nActivity 1 : Open Rehearsal\nDate & Time 16 Sept 2023 (Sat) 3:00PM-4:30PM\nFee Free to admission\nVenue Exhibition Gallery\, Sha Tin Town Hall\nActivity 2 : Tea Tasting Workshop & Dance Masterclass\nDate & Time 17 Sept 2023 (Sun) 2:00PM-6:00PM\nTutors Xie Yin (Dance Masterclass)、Cheuk Yin (Tea Tasting Workshop)\nVenue Exhibition Gallery\, Sha Tin Town Hall

SUMMARY:When a Poo Woos
DESCRIPTION:City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) is kicking off the second highlight of the Season “It’s Summer!”\, titled When a Poo Woos. This dance theatre piece for families is led by CCDC Artistic Director Yuri Ng and marks the first collaboration of the company with Chun Tian Hua Hua. It is the perfect choice this summer for families to experience an exciting and adventurous dance journey filled with childlike wonder. \nAs one of the programmes of ‘International Arts Carnival 2023’\, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department\, When a Poo Woos will be performed at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall from 11 to 13 August 2023. \nThe story of The Excreman\, a picture book by Chun Tian Hua Hua\, was originally created by renowned artists Brian Tse and Alice Mak. It follows Excreman who is deemed worthless\, as he chases after his dream seeking personal value and meaning. After being featured on Yellow Bus\, a children’s publication\, the story became widely known among adults and children\, and was even adapted into musical works and showcased in exhibitions. In this unprecedented rendition of a popular character through contemporary dance\, Choreographer and Director Yuri Ng will be crafting this performance with nearly 40 dance artists from CCDC\, members of the CCDC Dance Centre ‘Dance Training and Performance Practice Programme’\, as well as primary and secondary school students of ‘CCDC Junior’. By incorporating ingenious stage designs\, costume\, and dazzling animation projection\, daily life and objects familiar to children will be transformed into adorable theatrical scenes. Along with newly arranged classical music and its familiar tunes and rhythms\, the young audiences will experience a thrilling\, whimsical\, and heart-warming adventure with Excreman\, expanding their horizon and filling their summer with meaningful fun! \nIn dark sewers fraught with danger\, Excreman races ahead of the lazy poo group\, braves cleaning squads\, and conquers perilous waves. His destination is a field of fragrant roses\, where he can turn into fertile soil and nourish the plants. In this journey\, Excreman and his fellow little poo-men encounter a mysterious “her” and together they embark on a quest of romance and adventure. The poo-squad may look unappealing and be doomed to a sinister fate\, yet they never fail to embrace one another and pursue their dreams\, finding the meaning of their existence along the way while shining with their skills and strengths. \nTo enjoy the full experience\, there will be ‘Add-on Talks’ where Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s Music Director Emeritus Yip Wing-sie and Cantonese linguist Benjamin Au Yeung (Ben Sir) will share their insights on the classical music featured in and the educational significance of When a Poo Woos. After each show\, audience members can also join a guided Backstage Tour where they can discover the fun and interesting workings of theatre behind the stage. \n11.8.2023 [Fri] 7:30pm\n12.8.2023 [Sat] 2:30pm\, 7:30pm\n13.8.2023 [Sun] 2:30pm

SUMMARY:Pa | Ethos & Dancing Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Succeeding the work-in-progress video creation of M.U.D. – Movement UnDefined 2022\, City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) is launching another cross-disciplinary production in dance season Dance Mud Spring: Pa | Ethos & Dancing Philosophy. The first half of the production is CCDC’s Residence Choreographer Sang Jijia’s dance work of pure physical movements\, while the second half is Corrupt the Youth’s lecture performance\, a debut collaboration with CCDC. They prompt a dialogue between dance and philosophy: boundaries vanish in the two dance creations\, where the audience can explore the possibilities between movement and stillness\, as well as questioning the essences of dance. \n‘Tableaux’ and ‘keep dancing’ use the body and the mind as the medium respectively. CCDC juxtaposes these two works contrasting in style and perspective\, inviting new and existing audiences to appreciate this cross- disciplinary production and open up different senses to keep the body and mind dancing and questioning constantly. \nPa | Ethos: Toured internationally for 11 Times; Asian Dancers Reshaping the Poetic Pinnacle of the Body\nPa | Ethos\, work of pure dance movements\, was created by CCDC’s Resident Choreographer Sang Jijia. The dancers’ articulate physicality and exquisite emotional sensibility\, coupled with composer Dickson Dee’s gripping\, spirited electronic music\, re-sculpts the physical capacity and poetry of the body. The work’s inspirations came from the fundamental concept of ‘Pathos’ in Aristotle’s masterpiece Art of Rhetoric\, as well as the popular street sculpture art in Greece. With a pure white facade\, the dancers are going to set free their bountiful primal passion amid the optimum rhythm. \nThe work had its world premiere at Fabbrica Europa per le arti contemporanee in Italy by Spellbound Contemporary Ballet in 2015. It has toured 11 times in multiple cities in Mainland China and overseas\, having appeared in Guangdong Dance Festival in China\, Oriente Occidente Dance Festival and Prospettiva Danza in Italy. Unlike the executions by Western dancers\, the CCDC dance artists in this special version of Hong Kong premiere are going to bring a different look to this aesthetic-oriented piece with the unique body language shared by Asians. They are going to unveil a brand of aestheticism in an Oriental-meets-Occident contemporary dance performance on the local stage. \n“Classical philosophy\, oriental thought\, electronic music and dance come together in a refined and passionate show.”\n— Marche Teatro \nDancing Philosophy: Corrupt the Youth’s Debut Cross-Disciplinary Dance Creation; Posing Questions About the Essences of Dance and the Present\nThe second half of the production is Dancing Philosophy\, created and performed by local Philosophy study group Corrupt the Youth and stage directed by CCDC Artistic Director Yuri Ng. In this lecture performance\, they will explore the boundaries between dance and philosophy with the audience. Through publishing popular philosophy articles and conducting online and offline discussions\, Corrupt the Youth has been pursuing with readers knowledge and theories in art\, humanities and the world at large. Yuri Ng has invited the group’s nine members to conduct a series of workshops\, having a dialectical dialogue on the essence of dance by means of movements and thoughts. This will also bring the audience an alternative viewing perspective and experience of contemporary dance. \nPhilosophers question and debate unceasingly. When nine philosophers and a dance artist exchange ideas dynamically in the form of ‘keep talking\, keep dancing’\, how would they strike sparks off one another? What is dance? What is contemporary dance? What is the contemporary dance that belongs to this city? There are perhaps no model answers to these questions – they may not even be questions exactly.
When philosophers start dancing\, we will pull down the barrier containing established concepts and move towards the possibilities between thinking and dancing. \nDuration is approximately 2 hours with 15-minute intermission \nPerformed in Cantonese with no surtitles \nAudience of aged 6 or above are welcomed
