SUMMARY:Keiko Aikawa and Yuka Umino: Existence
DESCRIPTION:Yidi Art proudly presents the inaugural duo exhibition of the Japanese artists Keiko Aikawa and Yuka Umino titled “Existence\,” opening on 21 December 2023. The exhibition “Existence” takes you on a trajectory where two female artists encounter and embody their discontentment with the current state of everyday life while pushing the limits of human existence by blurring the boundaries of fixed images and bodies using their paintings\, in hopes of symbolically fulfilling their unsatisfied desires and constructing a better future despite the given social standards and expectations. \nAikawa refuses to accommodate the existence of the given ordinary everyday life by exploring and creating invisible images in portraitures. Such an approach embodies her unique perspective while giving a new existence to ordinary portraitures. The artist abstracts and complexifies the portraits by incorporating linework and brushstrokes unapologetically. Additionally\, similar to the approach of cubism\, she utilizes bold flat shapes and forms to fragment the human visages. The approach helps bring various perspectives of the faces together in the same pictorial space and further accentuates the complexity of human emotions and desires. \nSimilarly\, another artist in the exhibition Yuka Umino distorts human beings in her paintings but instead focuses on human bodies. Umino utilizes the burgeoning dynamic brushstrokes in her work to symbolize the instability of sensations and personalities\, the interrelated behavioral\, cognitive and emotional patterns that are modifiable\, that extend beyond the physicality of bodies. Umino therefore reclaims her own desired existence by embodying sensations and personalities in her work\, while expressing her discontentment with forfeiting the right to choose her own body from the very beginning. \n‘Existence\,’ by definition\, is the state of being real or participating in reality. However\, what does it mean to exist in this world? How does existence differ from person to person? Does your existence depend on societal expectations? Society has imposed expectations on all people\, yet they are mostly fictional. Ironically\, these expectations are passed down from generation to generation and are deeply ingrained in our minds. People are therefore naturally forced to exist under this fictional confinement to fulfill their roles in society\, reinforcing all kinds of stereotypes and injustice. Our existence is as such constantly engulfed by social standards and expectations\, without truly compromising our own desires and needs. Their tableaux radically address the universal existence of people in a world in which we accept the values others have created. The dialogue between Aikawa and Umino speaks unyieldingly to the resistance to the current state of their everyday life through the act of destruction and rebuilding in their pictorial space. The exhibition embodies their desire to control this given existence and aspiration for an ideal future where people are no longer confined by societal expectations\, while inviting viewers to ruminate on the idea of existence based on their own profile.

SUMMARY:Silvio Mildo: All Flowers Need Watering
DESCRIPTION:Yidi Art is proud to present Silvio Mildo’s first solo in Hong Kong\, “All Flowers Need Watering” from 6 January to 2 February 2023. Abstract\, sometimes primitive\, the artist approaches painting with spontaneity\, almost instinctively to capture the outpouring of his thoughts\, his memories\, his emotions. His works compile into a logbook of his intimate life and his moods. \nPainting is acquiring order and rigor through the canvas to Mildo. By the matter of energy and movements\, his creative process gives him absolute freedom to define his own space\, focus\, and brings him back to basics\, a way of reassuring himself to exist. With Crayon\, oil paint\, spray\, acrylic and more\, the artist mixes textures and renderings to better experiment with new approaches and “tame chaos”. The result is an effervescent and exuberant painting\, with assumed freedom. \n“I am the very expression of my person when I paint. It’s a way of reassuring yourself to exist. Especially in a time when everything is very quickly consumed. Where instability reigns over everything. Where the smallest thing that is\, remains very fragile. It’s more a search for origins\, a way to refocus myself\, to be able to offer viewers a very personal sample of who I am.”\n– Silvio Mildo \nThis exhibition concretizes his motif of the apricot fruit to begin his journey on memory – his origins and Armenian roots from his mother. In order to explore an unknown side\, practically set aside himself\, he delves into his memories and probes his Armenian roots reinterpreting this emblem of Armenia. Mildo further explores the territory of painting\, purifies his color palette and airs his compositions to channel his impulses and leave ample room for sketching and line. \n“I did not choose to paint apricots. It came to me in an obvious way.”\n– Silvio Mildo \nApart from the apricot being the emblematic fruit of Armenia\, according to a biblical legend of Noah’s ark\, which ran aground on the one of the slopes of the Mount Ararat in historical Armenia\, on the soil Noah fertilized nothing could grow but the apricot tree. The fascination linked to this resistance is a way for the artist to materialize all living things to become as strong as this tree and resist the floods of life.

SUMMARY:A Brand New Day
DESCRIPTION:Yidi Art is pleased to present Taiwanese artist Leoz Weng’s first solo exhibition\, “A Brand New Day” from 18th November to 15th December\, 2022. \nThe oeuvre of Leoz’s current exhibits features his “Little Forrest Genie” characters. These characters sprouted from his imaginary friends he fantasized the company of to find comfort during his lonesome childhood being a “latchkey child”. Currently\, his two daughters became the prototypes for his genie motif in his works\, building up a populous fantasy world: a small forest inhabited by genies and elves being a place of dreams\, a haven where people can retreat from reality. \nHis canvas portrays various scenes of an innocent girl centered in her whimsical\, vivid-coloured universe\, surrounded with an array of critters friends\, radiating a pleasing\, gleeful aura. Despite the mild and limited interaction between the characters\, the harmonious scene of pure companionship brings delight and contentment to the child\, perceptible from her expression. \nBeing Leoz Weng’s first solo exhibition\, the artist anticipates this as the start of a new beginning of his life. will surely open up a new day of splendor for the painter and the audience.

SUMMARY:All things bright and beautiful\, All creatures great and small
DESCRIPTION:Yidi Art is proud to present “All things bright and beautiful\, All creatures great and small” from 14th October – 10th November 2022. The group exhibition will feature figurative paintings that explore distinct perceptions of life and living things from 6 Asian artists: Jun Makita\, Hong\, Heru Priyono\, CHNO\, Tisha Paculba\, and Jessa Almirol. \nThe Covid pandemic has vastly affected many lives in unprecedented ways. Beyond the adversity\, the artists evaluate their philosophy of life\, and have diligently constructed their interpretations on canvases with much skill.\nWith the array of unique styles and figures\, Yidi Art will be enriched with diverse scenes of individuality and the wonders of life. \nThis exhibition is named in honor of the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful\,” written by Cecil Frances Alexander in 1848 and later composed by John Rutter. The poem celebrates and appreciates the beauty of nature designed by God\, a fitting theme that coheres with the collective significance of the 6 artists with grace. \n“All Things Bright & Beautiful\nAll creatures great and small\,\nAll things wise and wonderful\,\nThe Lord God made them all.\nEach little flower that opens\,\nEach little bird that sings\,\nHe made their glowing colours\,\nHe made their tiny wings.\nThe purple-headed mountain\,\nThe river running by\,\nThat brightens up the sky.\nThe cold wind in the weather\,\nThe pleasant summer sun\,\nThe ripe fruits in the garden –\nHe made them every one.\nHe gave us eyes to see them\,\nAnd lips that we might tell\nHow great is God Almighty\,\nWho has made all things well.”\n“All Things Bright and Beautiful\,” Cecil Frances Alexander\, 1848 \nJapanese artist Jun Makita began his journey as a self-directed painter after withdrawing from college. He draws inspiration from animals\, plants\, sky and clouds\, along with other works such as old paintings\, picture books\, punk and hip-hop music\, and graffiti. In summer of 2020 he commenced work on his current melancholic style\, using animals and flowers as motifs. His characters share a similar bleak expression with a hint of a mischievous child’s heart. \nHong from China is a leisurely but also an enthusiastic housewife and the mother of one. Despite having no formal training\, Hong was nurtured by her family and deeply immersed in the art world where her enthusiasm grew progressively. Small animals are her muse and she can often comprehend the wisdom of life via interacting with them. Her paintings portray anthropomorphic\, pure-hearted animals that play different roles in symbolizing her attitude and principles towards life. \nIndonesian artist Heru Priyono enjoys working his memories of joy onto his paintings. He takes inspiration from his childhood where he remembered the world of play and laughter. Priyono’s works are populated with fascinating\, charming creatures in vivid colors and patterns\, triggering one’s imagination to participate in his world of simplicity and delight. \nCHNO (Christian Navarez) is a self-taught artist based in the Philippines. He started as a street artist in 2014 and has been a mural artist for over 3 years. During the Covid pandemic\, he has demonstrated how he has struggled as a street artist but continues thriving. He earned a new title\, “Box Head Boy”\, for his recent creation of “Box Type World”\, in which he reforms objects\, animals and humans into a box-type figure. \nTisha Paculba is a painter\, sculptor\, graphic artist and a video editor from the Philippines. Her usual art practices involve her experimental use of different media and materials. After the Covid pandemic she moved her focus on producing art pieces that closely resembled a lowbrow/pop surrealism genre. Growing up surrounded by nature’s abundance\, her works are based upon the environment where she formed memories she wishes to be preserved. She depicts her world in detail painting of plants and creatures in soft hues on canvases. \nFilipina artist Jessa Almirol’s oeuvre is named after the term “Pantsdrunk” which originated from an asocial Finnish culture referring to the act of drinking alone without loneliness\, wearing little to nothing to show having no intention to go out. Jessa sees it as an art of relaxation and her form of meditation\, the authentic way of relaxing without telling or announcing to anyone and eventually it leads her to solitude. Her “Pantsdrunk” series is a reflection of her personal emotions. In her current works\, she wishes to encourage people to be humble and appreciative of great humanity and all living things including animals for the universe is greater than our existence.
