SUMMARY:Kyoko Murase: Works on paper
DESCRIPTION:SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present Kyoko Murase “works on paper” from July 9 – August 14\, 2022. Essential to her oeuvre which manifests the sensorial experience in a mysterious natural world\, Murase’s works on paper display the artist’s liberated exploration of her unique gradient brushworks and dreamlike visual language\, while existing as a delicate presence in the world of her creations. The exhibition will feature 18 works from 2001 to 2016 including previously unexhibited works. \nOver the years\, Murase has developed a visual language all of her own about the delights of nature. Following the drifting hair and limbs of her characteristic figures\, who act as a personal and instinctive “entrance” to the picture\, viewers are invited to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of navigating a forest or a cave\, the tactile sensation of breeze\, water\, vines and ferns caressing the skin\, and the distant tweets and humming of birds and insects. The creatures and the environments intermingle in a constant flux\, faintly appear and dissolve in swaying motions reminiscent of whirling clouds or the shimmering surface of a river. This texture is achieved by distinctive striated brushstrokes in rich color gradations that are simultaneously controlled and carefree\, soft and dynamic. \n“works on paper” is the artist’s 12th solo presentation at the gallery and the 2nd in Hong Kong\, showcasing a selection of her works during the span of 15 years. \nBorn in Japan\, and having resided in Germany for over 20 years\, Murase has developed a persistent yet ever-evolving body of work\, similar to “bean-sprouting” as she describes it\, which has won her worldwide acclaim since her early career. From swans\, to butterflies\, to intricate branches; from mystical forests to parks; from characters turning away to facing the audience – Murase’s subjects are subtly informed by her surroundings. While continuing to employ an original blend of pigment with oil and resin that retains the brush movements\, her drawings on paper serve as a study as well as a medium of exploration of her signature motifs. Alongside her paintings on cotton and canvas\, her paper works\, stained with overlapping gouache and pigment blotches\, and drawn with free-hand pencil and marker lines\, demonstrate the artist’s continuous endeavor to expand her means of delivery\, further complicating the perceptions and spatiality of an ethereal natural world she has been creating until today.

SUMMARY:"HANGA" Tomoo Gokita + Sanya Kantarovsky
DESCRIPTION:SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present “HANGA” Tomoo Gokita + Sanya Kantarovsky\, from May 7 to Jun 19\, 2022. The title “HANGA” means the art of printmaking in Japanese. \nBoth artists have been indulging in the painterly exploration of oneiric human figures\, wilfully engaging or altering artistic or historical references in their own signature styles. Through various printmaking craftsmanship on different paper supports\, all produced in limited editions\, Gokita’s paintings in soft tones are transmitted in precise details\, while Kantarovsky’s painted compositions replete with satire and sensations converse with the tradition of Edo-period woodblock prints. We invite you to take this chance to view the masterful printmaking techniques and their dialogues with the prominent body of works of the artists. \nAs varied as his artistic resources spanning from music\, magazines to personal encounters\, Tomoo Gokita’s oeuvre comprises not only paintings but also prints\, record covers and apparels among others. Whether in monochrome or pastels\, Gokita’s works are characterised by his gradient hues and velvety brushstrokes\, depicting psychological characters that exist between abstraction and figuration. \nIn an effort to faithfully transmit Gokita’s canvases into prints\, two distinct techniques were employed: in “MAE E NARAE” and “Oscalypso”\, the original paintings were rendered through silkscreens\, a method in which ink or paint is pushed through a fine mesh screen; whereas in “Housewife”\, the prints were created as stencilled pulp paintings\, where ink is applied over pulp paper with cut-out shapes. Each sheet of screen or pulp paper finely contours imagery based on the colours dissected from the originals\, while preserving the movements of Gokita’s brushworks. The contrast between the stillness of the prints\, which were hand-executed by printmakers layer after layer\, and the seemingly moving paints on the surface\, creates a unique viewing experience and a collectable work in refreshing textures. \nOn the other hand\, Sanya Kantarovsky developed a series of ink and watercolour studies during a residency at the Troedsson Villa in Nikko in 2018. Closely considering the Edo-period Ukiyo-e prints that draw on Kabuki and Noh theatre\, and works by masters such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi\, Kantarovsky created a set of dark and satirical pictorial drama titled “Paradise”\, akin to his works that often allude to humanist paintings and caricature. The compositions were then translated into an edition of Ukiyo-e prints by the Adachi Hanga printmakers\, who strive to keep alive the Japanese woodcut printing technique\, in which a woodblock is carved\, inked\, and pressed against a piece of washi-paper to create images. Provoked by the confrontations between the characters\, the grisly and haptic themes are transmuted through the subtlest lines and colours\, scrubbed and veiled with a persistent restlessness. \nThis exhibition marks the first presentation of Kantarovsky at the Hong Kong space. The Russia-born\, New York-based artist’s practice revolves around painting\, taking aim at imagined human subjects\, which are often entangled in a variety of discomforts\, both psychological and physical. This indulgence is marked with a wry self-reflexivity\, acknowledge the futility of faithfully transmuting lived experience. \nThis exhibition is in held in collaboration with T&Y Projects\, BLUM & POE\, Pace Prints\, and the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints.

SUMMARY:Shinpei Kusanagi: A VIEW FROM A PLATFORM
DESCRIPTION:SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present “A VIEW FROM A PLATFORM”\, a solo exhibition of paintings by Shinpei Kusanagi from December 10\, 2021 to January 30\, 2022. This will be his fifth solo presentation with the gallery and his first in Hong Kong\, featuring 14 paintings from 2017 – 2021. \nKusanagi’s paintings are characterized by the staining of untreated fabrics with layers of translucent acrylic colours. Between flows of unrestricted colours emerge wavering abstract landscapes that are both vibrant and tranquil\, with details that subtly evoke natural scenes such as trees\, foliage\, flowers\, ponds and butterflies. His paintings invite viewers to conceive imaginations and recollections of places rather than precise depictions. More than ever in recent years\, the artist incorporates swift and spontaneous brushstrokes while leaving areas of the canvas bare\, allowing the ambiguity of his subjects to constitute a constantly shifting picture between the here and now and an unknown elsewhere. \nBy appointment only\nPlease email shoptig@takaishiigallery.com

SUMMARY:TIG Books & Editions
DESCRIPTION:SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present “TIG Books & Editions”\, a showcase of Taka Ishii Gallery’s art publications and special editions\, from Oct 23 – Nov 28\, 2021. Since 1995\, Taka Ishii Gallery has published over 100 art books and catalogues\, which serve as documentation of the artists’ creative process and exhibitions\, as well as a medium of art expressions. Through these publications\, both Japanese and international artists are presented to a wider audience. \nPhotobooks have been one of the major publications of Taka Ishii Gallery since its first publication in 1995\, a photobook Imitation by Daido Moriyama on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition at the gallery. The collection of images condensed in a book effectively outlines the works by categorizing them into themes and time sequences. This is favored by many in this exhibition include Umegaoka Elegy\, a diary cum photo book published in 2019 by Nobuyoshi Araki in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition with the gallery\, which candidly reflects his daily life through his lens capturing his preferred habitual subjects. \nExhibition catalogues remain another major part of the gallery’s publishing projects\, taking up the roles of documenting and archiving exhibitions\, accompanied by on-site images chronology\, and articles. Book designs complement the style of individual artists’ oeuvres\, resulting in a hybrid output that artists of various stages are introduced and promoted across platforms. Taka Ishii Gallery’s Survived! was published in commemoration of its 25th anniversary in 2019 in line with a group exhibition featuring works by 37 gallery artists. As an extension of the exhibition and retrospection\, the book listed every project the gallery held since its establishment. \nEdition works are considered to be artworks produced in limited amounts and each volume is a unique collectable artwork\, on par with the artists’ own creations. The gallery has been part of the creations of several special editions including Nobuyoshi Araki’s 69YK gelatin silver prints\, several of Daido Moriyama’s Color silkscreen prints\, hand-etched copper plate photogravure prints\, and BC by Sterling Ruby in hardcover bound with original self-bleached fabric. \nThis exhibition features 46 books and 12 edition works published by Taka Ishii Gallery and collaborators\, including Case Publishing\, TAP\, KURENBOH\, Omoplata and Little Big Man Books / Smith Andersen North\, spanning from 1998 (Doug Aitken’s Metallic Sleep) to 2021 (Tomoo Gokita’s MOO). \nBy appointment only. Please email shoptig@takaishiigallery.com
