SUMMARY:Turandot
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the centennial of the death of Giacomo Puccini\, one of the foremost opera composers of the early 20th century\, Opera Hong Kong will present five performances of Turandot from October 10th to 13th at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Turandot was Puccini’s final and unfinished legacy. After his death\, Franco Alfano completed the opera based on Puccini’s drafts. \nThe plot revolves around Princess Turandot\, who challenges her suitors with three riddles. The person who solves the riddles will receive her hand in marriage; those who fail will be executed. Prince Calàf falls in love with Turandot at first sight and is willing to risk his life to win her heart. Among the opera’s highlights is Calàf’s famous aria Nessun Dorma\, whose melody is widely recognised and unforgettable. \nA significant portion of the music in Turandot is based on Chinese melodies\, most notably the children’s choir’s rendition of “Jasmine Flower” in the first act. This came about because Puccini was given a music box by a former Italian diplomat in China. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China\, Opera Hong Kong artistic director and the producer of Turandot\, Warren Mok\, has created a production infused with Chinese cultural elements to both honour Puccini and celebrate Chinese culture. \nDirector Jia Ding is a National Class-I Playwright who has directed over 400 large-scale national performance events. He has frequently served as CMG New Year’s Gala’s chief planner\, director\, and overall designer. He has also created and directed major works such as the large-scale classic music epic The Long March Suite\, the musical Love Song\, and the opera The Answer. For Opera Hong Kong\, the Director and his team will tailor a version of Turandot especially for Hong Kong SAR. The production will integrate elements of traditional Peking Opera\, featuring a multi-dimensional immersive stage design\, and ensuring that the Chinese elements are more than symbolism. \nThe international soloists include Russian soprano Anastasia Boldyreva and Ukranian soprano Oksana Nosatova as Princess Turandot. The role of Calàf will be performed by the Russian tenor Ivan Gyngazov and the South Korean tenor Andrea Shin. Calàf’s slave girl\, Liù\, will be sung by Chinese soprano Wang Bing Bing and the Hong Kong soprano Louise Kwong. They will perform alongside artists from mainland China\, including Zhang Wen Wei\, Sun Li\, Lin Zi Hao\, Yao Zhong Yi\, Liu Nai Qi\, and Zhou Jian Kun\, as well as Hong Kong local singers\, Henry Ngan\, Chen Yong\, Apollo Wong\, and Wesley Lam. \nThe Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra\, Opera Hong Kong Chorus\, and Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus will perform under the baton of maestro Yuan Ding\, the principal resident conductor of the National Opera House in Beijing. He has successfully led numerous international orchestras\, including the MDR Leipzig Symphony Orchestra\, and collaborated with top ensembles in China such as the National Symphony Orchestra and Choir. Renowned for his profound skill and precise interpretations\, Maestro Yuan Ding has conducted over 40 Western classic operas and original Chinese-language operas and excels in showcasing the artistic allure of diverse styles. \nDate and Time: 10-12 October 2024 | 7:30 pm\, 12-13 October 2024 | 3:00 pm

SUMMARY:The Abduction from the Seraglio
DESCRIPTION:Opera Hong Kong will present The Abduction from the Seraglio (Die entführung aus dem serail) at Hong Kong City Hall on August 17th and 18th at 7:30 pm. Mozart\, who composed 22 operas throughout his life\, completed The Abduction from the Seraglio as his first opera when he moved to Vienna. Written in German as a commission from Emperor\, Joseph II\, this opera magnificently captures the exuberance and allure of youth\, marking a significant milestone in his youth. \nThe Abduction from the Seraglio revolves around the theme of “rescue” featuring a riveting and plot- twisting narrative with vividly portrayed characters. The story follows the Spanish nobleman Belmonte\, who\, with the help of his servant Pedrillo\, journeys to the harem of Bassa Selim in Turkey to rescue his beloved Konstanze and her maid Blonde\, both kidnapped by pirates. Set against an exotic backdrop\, this opera is light-hearted and humorous\, standing as Mozart’s first masterpiece of German comic opera. Premiering in 1782\, it was an immediate success and became the most frequently performed opera during Mozart’s lifetime. \nOpera Hong Kong will present this comic opera in a semi-staged format. Without relying on elaborate stage designs\, the semi-staged opera demands a high level of interpretative skill from the conductor\, singers\, and musicians\, emphasizing the opera’s core — the music itself. \nFor this production\, the renowned German conductor\, Michael Koehler will lead the Opera Hong Kong Orchestra and Chorus. Since 2000\, Koehler has served as the Music Director and Artistic Director of the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra. The production will be directed by Tang Xinxin\, who was resident director at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Beijing. Since relocating to Singapore in 2015\, she has produced numerous opera works internationally. SUMMARY:Le Docteur Miracle
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Opera Hong Kong and OperaLab as part of the French May Arts Festival and with the support of the French Consulate\, HKUST is happy to present Dr Miracle (Le Docteur Miracle\, 1857)\, a one-act comic opera written by Georges Bizet when he was just eighteen for a competition run by the master of French operetta\, Jacques Offenbach. A joint winner with Charles Lecocq\, the opera was performed eleven times at Offenbach’s Bouffes-Parisiens theatre. More operetta than opera\, and only about an hour in length\, Dr Miracle is a comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously\, yet still shows early evidence of the talent of the future composer of Carmen. \nReset in Hong Kong and performed here for the first time\, Dr Miracle tells the timeless story of a young woman in love with a boy her overbearing father thinks unsuitable — only a doctor or lawyer will do — but\, despite the attractions of a vain and flirty stepmother\, love finds a way through various disguises\, a poisoned possibly omelette\, and a fake doctor with a miracle cure. \nDr Miracle is an accessible and laugh-out-loud introduction to the world of French opera and operetta\, and a newly discovered gem for those that know Bizet’s other\, more famous\, works. \n* Dr Miracle will be followed by the Paris-written one-act comic opera Rita\, a delicious farce written at the end of Gaetano Donizetti’s life\, while he was living in Paris. Donizetti’s music and Gustave Vaëz’s French libretto result in an Italian take on French opéra-comique with a story so familiar that it could be set anywhere — even Hong Kong! \nRita owns a small restaurant and she happens to have two husbands too! She believes the first husband died in an accident\, instead he had run away to Canada. During their relationship\, he hadn’t treated her very well\, something which — with her new freedom — she now takes out on her timid second husband. As far as Husband#1 knows\, Rita is dead too. He’s coming back to get her death certificate and be free to marry again. Husband#2 witnesses the reappearance of his predecessor\, clearly very much alive and married\, and sees it as a chance to escape his marriage to the tyrannical Rita. The two men meet and agree to play a special game: the winner will keep Rita as his wife forever. It goes without saying that both will try hard to lose! \nThe running time of the performance is approximately 75 minutes for Dr Miracle and 55 minutes for Rita\, both operas are in one act\, with intermission. Sung respectively in French and Italian with English dialogue and Chinese and English surtitles.

DESCRIPTION:Filled with love\, jealousy and blinding hatred\, Il Trovatore is Giuseppe Verdi’s most passionate opera. With a lost brother\, a child thrown into a fire\, and a fatal gypsy curse\, it also has one of his intricate plots\, while in his music\, Verdi combines the dramatic fireworks of the medieval Spain of the story with the lyricism of his native Italy\, resulting in one of the composer’s most iconic and memorable works. \nAn Opera in Four Acts\nPerformed in Italian with Chinese and English Surtitles \n11 May – 7:45pm\n12 May – 7:45pm\n13 May – 7:45pm\n14 May – 3:00pm

SUMMARY:La Bohème
DESCRIPTION:Opera Hong Kong’s first full-scale production for 2023 will be Puccini’s La Bohème\, to be staged in the Grand theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from the 12th to 15th of January 2023. La Bohème is one of the most staged operas across the world. This production will inaugurates collaboration between Opera Hong Kong and well-known director and theatre educator Mr Tang Shu-wing\, which see this opera classic set in 19th century-Paris is transposed to Hong Kong in a contemporary setting. \nOriginally set in the Latin Quarter in Paris\, La Bohème tells the story of young people in the process of self-discovery between feckless youth and adult responsibility. The main storyline revolves around the tragic love between Rodolfo the poet and Mimi the seamstress. Earning only a pittance\, the two meet in a humble abode. Later\, owing to Rudolfo’s jealousy\, they part ways only to make up just before Mimi’s death. Marcello the artist is the most appealing character in the opera – everyone would welcome and love such a true and helpful friend as him. The other soprano is the coquettish and sassy Musetta. Although she is always giving Marcello a hard time\, she is certainly not “unworthy of forgiveness” as self-indicted in her last prayer for Mimi. Puccini makes us believe that as long as there is hope\, life will change for the better. Everyone who has loved\, or yearned for love\, will not be untouched after watching this opera. La Bohème is\, despite its heart-breaking denouement\, a celebration of what it means to be alive. \nPremiered in 1896\, this opera’s exquisite music and rigorous four-act structure have made it one of the most popular Italian operas of all time. Its close-knit string of arias\, duets\, trios and quartets\, with Rodolfo’s Che gelida manina (What a cold little hand) and Mimi’s Si\, mi chiamano Mimi (Yes\, they call me Mimì) being the most well-known examples\, are familiar tunes for opera aficionados. \nDirector Tang Shu-wing will adopt a unique approach to swap the outward features of this opera for a Hong Kong setting. Apart from its fresh appeal\, the audience will also be more ready to resonate with the music and story. Opera Hong Kong has rising stars emerging talents from Hong Kong\, mainland China and across the world to portray these characters from every day\, making the dramatis personae even more relatable to us for convincing characterization. \nAn Opera in Four Acts\nPerformed in Italian with Chinese and English Surtitles \n12 – 15 Jan at 19:45

SUMMARY:Verdi’s La Traviata
DESCRIPTION:Opera Hong Kong is delighted to present the grand production La Traviata featuring the most sought-after overseas artists\, including Venera Gimadieva\, Stacey Alleaume\, Kang Wang\, Mario Chang\, Stephen Powell and Luca Grassi. The opera will be staged from 5 to 9 Oct\, 2022\, at the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Cultural Centre. \nLa Traviata (“The Fallen Woman”) is Giuseppe Verdi’s most immediate opera\, set in what was the composer’s “present day”. A touching yet tragic love story\, the work is also a forceful indictment of class bigotry and gender prejudice that still resonates today\, a story all the more poignant — and credible — at a time when pestilence once again cuts a deadly swathe through society. \nVioletta\, suffering secretly from tuberculosis\, is a Parisian courtesan\, who is independent\, beautiful\, elegant\, charming\, witty\, but not the sort of woman welcomed into good families. Alfredo falls in love\, as does Violetta\, the first true love for each of them: they embark on a happy affair that is broken up by the machinations of Alfredo’s father\, Giorgio Germont. Alfredo’s faith is broken\, but behaves abominably; even his father is ashamed. Regret comes too late\, as Violetta\, destitute\, succumbs to the illness that has been plaguing her. She dies in the arms of the now penitent and reconciled father and son. \nWinner of Molière Award of the best musical show\, Director Jean-Louis Grinda has been the General Director of Opéra de Monte-Carlo since 2007 and has directed wide range of repertoires including La Périchole\, Die Fledermaus\, Don Giovanni\, The Tales of Hoffmann\, Falstaff\, Rigoletto\, Mefistofele\, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges\, La Navarraise and Duello amoroso. He also collaborated with Opera Hong Kong in Aida (2017) and Don Giovanni (2019). \nWorld-class conductor\, Renato Palumbo is praised “Cavaliere della Repubblica italiana” (knight of the Italian Republic) for his artistic merits. His international career began very early as musical director of the Istanbul State Opera of the Macau Festival and was latter appointed as the first Italian General Music Director at the Deutsche Oper. He is a regular guest at the major international theaters\, such as La Scala in Milan\, Paris Opéra\, Covent Garden in London\, Pesaro and Martina Franca festivals. \nRussian soprano Venera Gimadieva debuted her Violetta Valéry in La Traviata to enormous acclaim. It becomes one of her signature roles with subsequent performances at the Royal Opera House\, Covent Garden\, La Fenice\, Opéra National de Paris and Glyndebourne Festival Opera\, as well as her US debut with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. Other signature roles of Gimadieva including the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor and The Queen of Shemakha in The Golden Cockerel. \nStacey Alleaume\, an accomplished Australian-Mauritian Soprano\, will share the role of Violetta Valéry. Alleaume was awarded the prestigious AOAC Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship for outstanding Australian operatic talent. She also won the Waiariki Institute of Technology New Zealand Aria in 2011\, as well as Australia’s longest-running and most prestigious awards\, The Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship 2012 and the Herald Sun Aria 2013. Her principal roles with Opera Australia also include Violetta Valéry in La Traviata both on the mainstage and Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour\, Fiorilla in Il Turco in Italia\, Sophie in Werther\, Gilda in Rigoletto\, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Valencienne in The Merry Widow. \nAlfredo will be sung by the renowned tenors Kang Wang and Mario Chang. Australian-Chinese tenor\, Kang Wang was a grand finalist in the 2017 Cardiff Singer of the World competition and 2nd Prize winner of the 2017 International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Moscow\, Russia. Highlights of the past season include a return to the Metropolitan Opera for Edmondo in Manon Lescaut opposite Sonya Yoncheva and Marcelo Álvarez\, Opera Australia and Welsh National Opera as Alfredo in La Traviata and more. Winner of the 2014 Operalia Competition and the overall First Prize in the Plácido Domingo Competition\, Guatemalan tenor Mario Chang has been praised as a “born bel canto tenor” by Anthony Tommasini in the New York Times. In the recent season\, Chang sang Alfredo in La Traviata at Washington National Opera and the Atlanta Opera. He returns to Oper Frankfurt for and returns to Santa Fe Opera to reprise the role of Rodolfo in a new production of La Bohème. \nStephen Powell and Luca Grassi will take on the role as Germont. Praised by Wall Street Journal for his “rich\, lyric baritone\, commanding presence\, and thoughtful musicianship”\, Stephen made a successful debut performance as the title role in Macbeth with Michigan Opera Theatre. Past seasons he was the title role of Sweeney Todd with Michigan Opera Theatre\, Germont in La Traviata with Seattle Opera\, San Diego Opera\, Opera Philadelphia and Los Angeles Opera\, Scarpia in Tosca with Minnesota Opera\, and more. Winner of numerous competitions\, Grassi debuted in La Traviata as Germont and sings the role later in many theatres including Oper Leipzig\, Opéra de Montreal and Teatro Verdi di Pisa. He has performed singing career in many opera houses and festivals around the world\, such as\, La Bohème (Marcello) in Glyndebourne\, Modena\, and Bergamo; Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) in Bologna\, Genova\, Glasgow\, at the Deutsche Oper of Berlin\, Roma. \nSpecial thanks to the continuous support from the Art Development Matching Grants Scheme of the Government of the HKSAR\, Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Leisure and Cultural Services Department\, as well as our title sponsor of 5-9 October performance\, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Private Bank and hotel sponsor\, New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel. \nDate and time: 5-9 October (Wed to Sun) 7:30pm\, 9 October (Sun) 3:00pm\nPerformed in Italian with Chinese and English Surtitles.
