SUMMARY:Feng Xiao-Min: Brush of Light
DESCRIPTION:Opera Gallery Hong Kong is delighted to present “Brush of Light\,” a solo exhibition featuring twenty paintings by French Chinese artist Feng Xiao-Min. Created between 2010 and 2024\, this presentation of paintings fuse an Eastern aesthetic sensibility with Western techniques\, dually referencing Chinese calligraphy and American Abstract Expressionism. \nThrough his multifaceted technique\, Feng portrays abstracted interpretations of time to create ambient\, dreamlike landscapes concerned with the interplay of form\, light and colour. His canvases are imbued with a distinct\, wordless sensibility that transcends the boundaries between movements in contemporary and historical painting. They evoke ocean vistas\, starless nights and endless dark matter\, drawing the viewer in with subtle washes of paint and forming seemingly boundless scenes reminiscent of twilit skies. \nFeng Xiao-Min\, who moved to Paris to study at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des BeauxArts after his early training in China\, manipulates acrylic paint as a calligrapher manipulates ink–with the precise control of the flow of paint and water. The result is an image that incorporates a uniquely broad range of influences\, from J.M.W. Turner to Zao Wou-Ki. \nThe suite of paintings in “Brush of Light” serve as an antidote to the claustrophobia of modern life. “In a somewhat chaotic world today\,” the artist explains\, “I would like to bring and express through my works a kind of balance\, purity and serenity.” Feng Xiao-Min’s paintings evoke warmth\, softness\, depth and diffusion\, collectively constituting a duality of wonder and tranquillity. Through his use of vivid colours and bold contrasts\, he brings his hazy subjects to life through spatial configuration with an atmospheric quality\, conveying a sense of movement and transformation. \nEach brushstroke is imbued with deep artistic intent\, created at a rare intersection of technique and expression. Each canvas embarks on an emotional journey\, guided entirely by the artist’s intuition. Referencing the raw and powerful energy of the natural world: skies and oceans\, hopeful dawns and dramatic dusks. Ultimately\, his work is a homage to light\, and an invitation to open our eyes and contemplate it with renewed wonder. \nPart of the French May Arts Festival 2024

SUMMARY:Niki de Saint Phalle: Garden of Joy
DESCRIPTION:Experience Niki de Saint Phalle’s imaginative world from 8 March to 6 April\, 2024. 20 works created between 1970 and 2000 will be presented by Opera Gallery Hong Kong. \nNiki de Saint Phalle (1930 – 2002) was a self taught French-American artist who was born in France and grew up in New York. Saint Phalle lived and worked between France\, Switzerland and the United States. The artist worked fluidly across a range of mediums: painting\, sculpture\, engraving\, performance\, writing and film. Her creations presented an assertive and unique point of view. She joined the Nouveaux Réalistes group in 1964 through her husband\, Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. \nSaint Phalle was originally propelled into the spotlight for her violent shooting performances\, during which she used firearms to burst riots of colour from objects\, transforming the action into assemblage paintings. She was later celebrated for her “Nanas”\, whimsical figures made from unconventional materials depicting animals\, monsters\, and females. Her voluptuous sculptures\, exhibited in cities and prestigious museums worldwide\, are emblematic of a vibrant\, idealised woman.

SUMMARY:Li Tianbing: Intrusion: Homage to Francis Bacon
DESCRIPTION:Opera Gallery Hong Kong is delighted to present «Intrusion: Homage to Francis Bacon»\, Li Tianbing’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. \nBorn under China’s one-child policy in 1974\, Li Tianbing experienced a grey and solitary childhood\, and suffered from the void of being raised alone. After moving to France in 1996 to follow his dream of becoming an artist by integrating the Ecole de Beaux-Arts de Paris\, Li Tianbing’s artistic aesthetic was disrupted by the discovery of Francis Bacon’s art during a retrospective held at the Centre Pompidou. The power that emanates from Bacon’s paintings pushes the artist to break out of his artistic comfort zone and influenced his work\, to the point that his peers called him “the Chinese Bacon”. \nIn this series\, Li Tianbing portrayed himself and his imaginary siblings as mischievous children who break into Bacon’s studio\, which used to be a forbidden place when the artist was still alive. Thus Francis Bacon’s studio becomes a playground where the children can be seen playing with the wanderings of their imagination\, splashing themselves with paint\, climbing on giraffes and playing with monkeys. Snow is an important visual element in Li Tianbing’s new body of works\, as it is something he also dreamt of experiencing as a child. His paintings allow him to reconstruct his childhood through parallel worlds. As the artist mentions: «My works are constantly trying to reshape my childhood and keep questioning my past memories».

SUMMARY:Basquiat\, Haring\, Scharf
DESCRIPTION:Opera Gallery Hong Kong is pleased to announce a large-scale group exhibition Basquiat\, Haring\, Scharf\, celebrating the work and friendship of three American icons; Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. Opening on Friday 1st April 2022\, the exhibition will comprise around 40 artworks that explore the vernacular and radical artistic dialogue pulsating between these three artists in New York’s East Village during the late 1970s and early 1980s. \nScharf has described the relationship between himself\, Basquiat and Haring as one anchored in a friendly rivalry that inspired and encouraged their individual and distinctive creative processes. Often referring to themselves as ‘the three musketeers’\, they revelled in the same street culture\, often explored the same topics\, and shared a belief that art was meant to be universal and accessible by the youth. Passing through an immersive installation of three artists’ works that will take over the gallery\, visitors will be able to see major works by Basquiat\, Haring and Scharf curated across all three floors of the gallery. \nJean-Michel Basquiat\, a self-taught artist\, started his career as an informal graffiti duo with Al Diaz named SAMO during the late 1970s. He first exhibited in a group show\, along with Haring and Scharf\, in 1980 that marked a turning point for him. Basquiat’s street art and Neo- Expressionist style are characterised by visually striking combinations of numerals\, pictograms\, anatomy drawings and commercial graphics\, addressing topics such as wealth versus poverty and integration versus segregation. His powerful drawings and paintings continue to challenge perceptions\, provoke dialogues and empower the audience to think critically about society. \nBest known for his mural works\, iconic motifs and pop graffiti technique\, Keith Haring’s creations responded to the contemporary social events of his times. Inspired by traditional street art and a philosophy of “The public has the right to art. Art is for everyone”\, Haring initially made his drawings on empty advertising spaces in New York’s subway stations. He developed a signature pictorial vocabulary\, combining bright and contrasting colours that grabbed the viewers’ attention\, and which were accessible by anyone\, regardless of age\, language\, and background. \nA school mate and friend of Haring’s during their time at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York\, Kenny Scharf describes himself as a “pop surrealist”; his practice spans painting\, sculpture\, fashion\, video\, performance art\, and street art. Scharf’s hallucinatory worlds are inspired by comic books and pop culture; his principle is to reach out beyond the elitist borders of fine art and connect to popular culture through his works.

SUMMARY:Chu Teh-Chun
DESCRIPTION:Now in its seventeenth year in the city\, Opera Gallery Hong Kong has announced their move to a new and larger space in Central. The new gallery space spans 5\,500 square-feet across three floors of The Galleria\, 9 Queens Road Central\, and opens today with an exhibition celebrating the master of Lyrical Abstraction Chu Teh-Chun. Presenting 18 paintings by the French-Chinese artist\, the Chu Teh-Chun solo exhibition runs until Sunday 14 November 2021. \nBorn in 1920\, Chu Teh-Chun moved to Paris in 1955 and is considered a forefather of Chinese modernist art. His unique visual language was heavily influenced by traditional Chinese calligraphy\, which he saw as “the basis of Chinese Painting”\, and a desire to break free from the norms established by Western Geometric Abstraction in the early 20th Century. Chu’s abstraction is a lyrical one lead by memory\, emotion and immediacy; the incessant movement of line and space within his compositions generating a virulent and spontaneous energy that continues to captivate. \n“We are delighted to be able to dedicate the inaugural exhibition in our new space to celebrating the Gallery’s long term partnership with Fondation Chu Teh-Chun. I first met Chu Teh-Chun 20 years ago at his studio in Paris and have worked with his family and the Fondation since\, I hope that many people in Hong Kong will be able to come in the gallery and enjoy the masterpieces we are honoured to be showing.” said Gilles Dyan\, Founder & Chairman of Opera Gallery Group. \nOpera Gallery Hong Kong is taking the opportunity of their move to reinvigorate their aim to make art accessible to anyone\, turning their galleries into a destination and a meeting point for collectors and visitors to discover upcoming artists while viewing world-class masterpieces. Under the leadership of new Gallery Director Olivier Demblum\, the main gallery has been carefully curated at street level to ensure the space is not only welcoming\, but encourages reflection and engagement with the works presented.
