DESCRIPTION:The University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong and L’ÉCOLE\, School of Jewelry Arts\, are honoured to welcome for the first time an exhibition devoted to jewellery designs\, jewellery masterpieces\, and the process of creating art from precious metals and stones. Little studied and published\, even more rarely exhibited\, jewellery drawings remain relatively unknown to the public. \nBenefitting from Van Cleef & Arpels Patrimony Collection combined with the Van Cleef & Arpels Jewelry Culture Fund\, set up for research\, presentation and educational purposes in 2019\, loans from Lalique Museum France\, and private jewellery Collections from Hong Kong\, the exhibition features a remarkable collection of about 100 drawings alongside 12 exquisite jewellery pieces. \nFrance has a long–standing\, distinguished\, and highly influential history of jewellery making. SUMMARY:Shakudō: from Samurai Ornaments to Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 5th anniversary of L’ECOLE Asia Pacific\, a newly curated exhibition titled “Shakudo: from Samurai Ornaments to Jewelry” will be unveiled on December 11th. \nFor one of the first exhibition devoted to shakudō\, L’ECOLE highlights the technique\, uses and fascinating history of this black metal traditionally used in Japan for the decorative elements of samurai swords (tsuba\, menuki\, kozura\, ete). \nFor this occasion\, L’ÉCOLE is showcasing more than 30 pieces of jewelry with European mounts adorned with shakudō elements inlaid with gold\, silver and copper\, depicting collection Japanese from the Edo period. All the jewelry pieces come from a single collection\, shown to the general public for the first time. \nThe exhibition\, organized in three main sections\, begins with the technical aspects of shakudō\, an alloy composed of 94% copper and 4% gold\, which gives it its red color. Shakudō literally means “red” and “copper”. To obtain its black patina\, metalworkers degrease and polish it with charcoal before immersing it in a chemical solution. They have excelled in this art since the 12th century when shakudō replaced urushi lacquer on swords. Due to lack of documentation\, the reason for this evolution remains unknown. This exhibition contextualizes shakudō in the global history of metalwork. It has in fact been detected in other cultures and civilizations\, and is even mentioned in classic texts such as the Iliad. \nHow did shakudō transition from swords to jewelry? The fascinating story has its origins in a political event: the opening of Japan to international trade during the Edo era\, from 1853 onwards\, under pressure from American “black ships”\, after two centuries of isolation. The country’s modernization with the abolition of the feudal system led to the end of the samurai and the prohibition of sword-carrying in 1876. The metalworkers\, deprived of their clients\, were encouraged by the Meiji government’s export policy to adapt their production to European tastes; they began to manufacture small components in shakudō. \nIn the West\, jewelers discovered – probably at the 1867 Universal Exhibition in Paris – the virtuosity of Japanese craftsmen\, capable of creating vibrant shades of gold\, copper and silver. In search of renewal\, they utilized these shakudō pieces bought from merchants who established themselves in London\, Paris\, and New York; they integrated them into their European settings in place of cameos and enamel miniatures. \nHybrids between European aesthetics and Japanese technique\, these jewels made between 1860 and 1880 illustrate the fascination with everything Japanese at the time. The shakudō  pieces inlaid with miniature scenes are an endless source of surprise and wonder. They bear witness to the lives of wealthy merchants in Edo (Tokyo’s former name)\, at the height of its peace and prosperity. Through magnifying glasses\, visitors can discover the minutest details of tea ceremonies\, women playing the koto\, fishing boats\, wild reeds\, and anthropomorphic animals. These miniatures also herald the end of a traditional world now subject to foreign influences: samurai\, stripped of their warrior spirit\, stroll along the water’s edge in kimonos.

Following the footsteps of previous editions\, which commenced with a 20th-century American Jewelry collection (New York\, 2018)\, followed by treasures from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (L’ÉCOLE Middle East\, Dubai\, 2018)\, and the prestigious Art Nouveau pieces curated by Kazumi Arikawa (L’ÉCOLE Japan\, Tokyo\, 2019)\, this exhibition focuses once again on the dialogue between cultures and their criteria of beauty. \nFeaturing around 50 diverse artifacts\, the exhibition represents a fusion of Western and Eastern aesthetics. The first section will present exquisite examples of Ming-era furniture\, celebrating the harmonious blend of craftsmanship and elegance. DESCRIPTION:L’ÉCOLE Asia Pacific\, School of Jewelry Arts presents its sixth exhibition “Daniel Brush\, An Edifying Journey: Gold\, Aluminum\, Steel”\, showcasing creations of the late American-born Contemporary artist Daniel Brush that are first shown to the public worldwide. “With the School’s mission to introduce diverse forms of jewelry arts to everyone\, we are excited to be the first in Asia to hold an exhibition of Daniel Brush who had truly demonstrated one’s creativity\, devotion in the making and passions of art\, all to the fullest extent.” said Élise Gonnet-Pon\, Managing Director of L’ÉCOLE Asia Pacific\, School of Jewelry Arts. \nTo the world of jewelry\, Daniel Brush’s creations are pure poems of light\, consummate objects of contemplation. We may wonder about the wearability or the finality of some of his pieces\, but this is only because we must see them as more than jewels\, as the spiritual quintessence of the jewel. In the artist’s own words: “Jewelry is a vehicle to get closer to the gods\, a conduit to allow dreams into our lives\, into the maze of it all.” By the simple act of donning one of his rings\, necklaces\, or bracelets\, the wearer adorns him or herself with the metal’s luminous spirit. \nThis path to the gods by way of the magic of stones and metals—the soul of the earth—and that of the jeweler’s hand began first and foremost as a journey of a poet in love. Daniel Brush encountered his muse at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon)\, and his search for a wedding band led him to jewelry. Inspiration beyond that of the sentimental variety also guided his work\, such as his astounding discovery of a gold Etruscan bowl at the Victoria & Albert Museum when he was only thirteen. The granulation technique used in the piece set him on the trail of ancient savoir-faire. And although he may have been self-taught\, that in no way prevented him from excelling at and pioneering in this area. Whatever the material or technique\, his hand sought a level of perfection that would render it invisible. \nPhilosophical or alchemical in nature\, his thought process around metals brought him to confront three of them: gold\, aluminum\, and steel. The exhibition is organized around his experimentations. While he discovered ancient goldworking techniques by his own means\, his techniques for working aluminum and steel were experimental. Once considered precious\, the metals had fallen out of favor in jewelry. Nothing could have pleased Daniel Brush more than to resurrect these forgotten metals and deploy them with technical asceticism\, all the while continuing to explore and nourish his vision through a wide range of sources including medieval objects and armor\, Japanese metalwork\, and Napoleonic travel cases\, among others.

For this exhibition\, the rings are categorized into five themes that define the collection and illustrate its diversity: History\, Gothic\, Christian Mystique\, Vanitas and Eclecticism. \nVisitors are invited to witness the vast geographical and temporal span: from the 17th century Venice doge rings to American biker rings back in the 1970s\, from skull rings to the bishop’s rings.
