This year’s theme is “Navigating to a Greener Future” and the museum will host a series of family-friendly activities and distribute free souvenirs to help the public learn about maritime history and industry in Hong Kong. Highlighted events include Aboard the Tugboat\, Logistics Promotion Mini-Exhibition & Game Booth\, and Hong Kong Maritime Museum & Jockey Club Anchor Plaza Tours. Additionally\, there will be simulator experience\, marine cartoon screening\, photography contest award presentation ceremony and exhibition\, lighthouse talk\, game and information booths\, tattoo sticker experience\, photobooth with captain Shiba\, and more. \nTogether with the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association\, HKMM is the co-organiser of the ninth Hong Kong Maritime Week. In partnership with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and InvestHK\, a week of maritime activities will be held from 16 to 22 November 2025. Through the activities\, HKMM hopes to promote Hong Kong as a preferred base for operating maritime business\, provide a networking platform for achieving further synergy among members of the maritime cluster and advancement of professionalism in various port and maritime services\, and raise public awareness of the economic significance of the port and maritime sectors as well as the prospects of a maritime career. \nFunded by the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF)\, in collaboration with Hongkong Salvage & Towage Services Ltd.\, Hong Kong China Life Saving Society\, Hong Kong Seamen’s Union\, Hong Kong Sea Cadet Corps\, Maritime Services Training Institute and Student Affairs Office\, College of Professional and Continuing Education\, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. HKMM opens its doors for free to the public on 22 November 2025. \nHighlighted events include Aboard the Tugboat supported by Hongkong Salvage & Towage Services Ltd. Visitors can join the guided tour for visiting the Hong Kong Salvage & Towage Services Ltd.’s multipurpose tugboat Tai O. Get a glimpse of the deck\, the engine room\, crew’s quarters and the galley. Additionally\, visitors can participate in the Logistics Promotion Mini-Exhibition & Game Booth provided by CPCE Student Affairs Office\, PolyU. This engaging mini-exhibition and game booth offer a fun introduction to logistics for visitors. Through immersive game booths like the Global Transport Adventure and E-commerce Delivery Challenge\, participants learn about technology and sustainability in the industry. The accompanying mini-exhibition showcases key concepts\, including cargo transport methods\, warehouse operations\, and Hong Kong’s logistics infrastructure\, etc. Designed to spark curiosity\, this initiative aims to inspire young minds to explore future academic opportunities in the dynamic logistics sector. \nThe public can also visit the newly opened Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza. Guided tours of Anchor Plaza led by curators\, help to explain the story of the anchor of the Seawise Giant\, and allow visitors to delve deeper into Hong Kong’s marine life and maritime history through a walkthrough pavilion with immersive Artech displays and interactive screens. \nThis 36-ton anchor holds extraordinary significance—it was once installed on Seawise Giant\, the largest cargo vessel ever built. The anchor stands as a symbol of the vessel’s former glory and embodies the remarkable history of Hong Kong’s maritime industry\, which aligns with the goal of Hong Kong Maritime Week to showcase the strength of the maritime industry. It marks the first Hong Kong presentation of the Sanxingdui and Jinsha Digital Special Exhibition. \nDeparting from traditional static displays\, it features the archaeology-related Exploring Sanxingdui VR Experience\, along with diverse and innovative interactive installations\, truly bringing history to life. Amidst the blend of virtual and reality\, the visitors will immerse themselves in the excavation process\, embarking on a cultural exploration journey across thousands of years. SUMMARY:Voyage Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Edward Stokes and presented by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM)’s curatorial team\, Voyage Through Time is a new exhibition of captivating photographs taken in Hong Kong between the 1940s and 1970s by celebrated photographers Hedda Morrison\, Brian Brake and Edward Stokes. These photos portray Hong Kong’s harbour\, its port\, shipping\, maritime life\, and boat people. \nA Visual Voyage Through the Post-war History of Hong Kong \nThe three well-respected photographers come from diverse backgrounds but share a common passion: they all found fascination in Hong Kong’s people and places. The exhibition features 40 framed photos\, illustrating 30 years of Hong Kong’s development from the end of World War II to the late 1970s. During these decades\, Hong Kong emerged from the impacts of a long war\, overcoming challenges and setbacks to experience a gradual economic and social resurgence to become a vibrant international port city. \nEach Photograph Tells a Hong Kong Harbour Story  \nFrom the post-war era to its rise as a modern metropolis\, these photos vividly capture a slice of Hong Kong’s history. Each photograph tells a unique harbour story. \nHedda Morrison captured post-war maritime Hong Kong with her camera. In one photo\, Wan Chai can be seen\, still barren after the war\, overlooking Victoria Harbour. Life for most people during this period was extremely hard. Many people were gaunt from hunger. \nBrian Brake’s photos were mainly taken in the 1960s to mid-1970s. During this era\, port facilities and city’s skyline saw significant development\, and the lives of its people became less hard. \nEdward Stokes’ photos were taken in 1979\, a pivotal time when Hong Kong transitioned to its emergence as a modern metropolis. There is one photo that depicts two boys who look adequately fed\, and almost certainly going to school – an unthinkable benefit for virtually all boat children in 1946. \nDigital Display “Past and Present” – A View Through Two Generations \nAnother highlight is the digital display showcasing the contrasting “past and present” photos of the Harbour\, its maritime life and environs. The black-and-white photos were taken by Hedda Morrison in 1946–1947. The colour photographs were taken a few years ago by Rogan Coles. During 2024\, Anton Aleshin took remarkable drone photos of the harbour and shipping.

SUMMARY:Maritime Carnival
DESCRIPTION:The Marine Department holds the Maritime Carnival to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) has been engaged to administer the Carnival and supported by eleven maritime related organisations. HKMM is thrilled to announce a day of celebrative and educational activities on 6 October 2024\, offering free admission. This special occasion will feature a vibrant array of activities designed to engage members of the public and their families while deepening their understanding of Hong Kong’s rich maritime history and industry. \nVisitors will have the opportunity to partake in a variety of interactive experiences\, including guided docent tours\, game and information booths\, marine movie screenings\, maritime-themed talks and seafarers’ exploration worksheets for children. Among the standout events are the “Oil and Marine Refuse Cleansing Demonstration” in which visitors can observe the measures and efforts of the Marine Department in keeping our harbour clean. Noteworthy vessels such as the Marine Refuse Scavenging Boat and the Oil Response Vessel will conduct demonstrations in the waters near the museum\, with narrators providing insights into their vital roles in protecting the marine environment. For those unable to attend in person\, these demonstrations will also be accessible via live streaming. \nAdditionally\, registered visitors will enjoy “Shipboard Visit” to the Marine Department’s Patrol Launch (MARINE 1) and Hydrographic Surveying Vessel (HYDRO 2). This unique opportunity allows visitors to step aboard these operational vessels\, gaining a closer look at their design and function. Each visitor will receive a souvenir from the Marine Department as a memento of their experience. Moreover\, the “Ship-handling Simulator Experience” will provide an immersive opportunity for attendees to navigate a virtual boat journey through Hong Kong’s waters. \nHighlight of the day include “Demonstration of Underwater Unmanned Systems Challenge” featuring works of award-winning students. Guided by the National Science and Technology Communication Center and organized by the China Electronics Society and China Oceanic Society\, these young innovators will showcase their cutting-edge underwater unmanned systems\, inviting visitors to experience operating these remarkable technologies. \nThe event is organized by the Marine Department and administrated by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum\, in collaboration with reputed maritime organizations namely the Hong Kong Seamen’s Union\, the Maritime Professional Promotion Federation\, the Maritime Services Training Institute\, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University\, the Small Craft Workers Union\, the Institute of Hong Kong Underwater Archaeology Research\, the Student Affairs Office of College of Professional and Continuing Education of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University\, the Hong Kong Science Popularization and Science Fiction Academy\, the Hong Kong Sea Cadet\, the Hong Kong Sea School and the Hong Kong Sea Scout.  Both the public and maritime community highly regard their works.

DESCRIPTION:The Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) announces the opening of “Across Victoria Harbour”\, running from 1 March to 15 May 2024.  This special exhibition tells the unique story of Victoria Harbour through the history of vessels that plied its waters\, including passenger vessels such as sampans\, ferries\, motorboats\, as well as working vessels like lighters\, tugboats\, and barges. The exhibition features a captivating collection of vintage Hong Kong photos\, paintings\, historical documents\, and ship models\, offering its audience a glimpse into the past.  Interactive elements will also enhance visitors’ experience of the exhibition.  A life-size reconstruction of the old motorboat ticket booth will enable visitors to take a sentimental photo with Victoria Harbour as its backdrop\, while the multimedia game “Travel by Walla-Walla” will allow the audience to step back in time and relive the nostalgia of chartering a motorboat in the bygone era.Organised and curated by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum\, the exhibition explores the rich history of cross-harbour vessels\, unveils their cultural significance and invites audiences to reconnect with the harbour\, vessels\, and the community’s collective memory. This exhibition centres around the familiar sight of Victoria Harbour. Through historical photographs and vessel models\, the exhibition illustrates maritime trade activities from Hong Kong’s early years to the present. Of particular interest to maritime enthusiasts will be the once-ubiquitous “Walla-Walla” that recalls the glory days of the motorboat industry.The exhibition is presented in four sections: “The Harbour\, the City and the People”\, “Crossing the Harbour”\, “Freight Transport” and “Changes in Harbour Voyages”. The exhibition will take the audience on a journey through time and illustrate the past and present of cross-harbour vessels with the range of exhibits on display. The exhibition follows the development of Hong Kong from 1842 to the present day\, examining how various vessels change alongside Hong Kong society. The increase in commercial activity and population saw the rise of cross-harbour transportation vessels such as ferries and motorboats\, catering to the demand for crossing the Victoria Harbour from the late 19th century. Meanwhile\, vessels ferrying cargo since before the opening of the port also experienced changes in size\, build and function\, adapting to the ever-changing needs of Hong Kong’s freight industry. \nThe exhibition also focuses on the communities behind the vessels. Photographs and historic documents paint a picture of their way of life on and with Victoria Harbour. Interviews with people who worked on “Walla-Wallas”\, lighters\, tugboats and barges will be featured in the exhibition\, allowing the audience to have a deeper understanding and insight into the lives of these communities. \nIn addition\, educational programmes with relevant art & culture elements\, guided tours\, and talks will be included\, targeting groups such as students\, families\, and young adults respectively\, while the significant collections are of interest to researchers. A series of exquisite souvenirs will be available on that day. \nThe Free Family Fun Day will celebrate the accomplishments of Swire’s TrustTomorrow initiative over the past three years and raise public awareness about marine conservation. TrustTomorrow has supported inspirational projects across the areas of Education\, Marine Conservation and the Arts to drive lasting\, positive change. Visit us to discover\, explore and learn more about marine wildlife from below highlight activities: \nTNC’s oyster work booth and “Restoring oyster reefs and their ecosystem services” workshop educate the participants about the Hong Kong oyster restoration. The work booth provides a VR game for participants to visit Pak Nai virtually. Participants can also create shell paintings and shell X’mas ornaments. And in the “Restoring oyster reefs and their ecosystem services” workshops\, participants can then enjoy an interactive art experience by creating a reef ball using recycled materials. Furthermore\, TNC will curate and present a special exhibition “The Oyster Odyssey: Restoring Hong Kong’s Lost Treasure” from 10 November 2023 to 31 January 2024 at HKMM. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming exhibition. \nArchireef’s coral artwork booth enables participants to learn about basic coral ecology and threats\, while interacting with coral models and skeleton specimens. An interactive session will be available for participants to create their own coral artwork using 3D printing pens and bring one home as a souvenir. And they will build a big coral reef ecosystem artwork together at the booth. \nHKBWS’s “A migratory adventure story of Roseate Tern” storytelling workshop is about its newly published children’s graphics booklet魯魯詩詩歷險記 – 粉紅燕鷗的遷徙故事. This is a story about seabirds’ migration adventure.

SUMMARY:Hong Kong’s Maritime Miracle: The Story of our City since 1945
DESCRIPTION:The Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) announces the opening of Hong Kong’s Maritime Miracle: The Story of our City since 1945\, running from 24 June to 30 October 2022. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the major sponsor of the exhibition. Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR\, the special exhibition will explore Hong Kong’s miraculous transformation from the ashes of World War II into a global maritime hub through 25 iconic exhibits. The exhibition leverages art and technology\, and features a series of five newly produced short movies directed by award-winning filmmaker Heiward Mak. Through a pioneering fusion of history\, art and science\, the museum is committed to providing an all-round experience for the public to learn and communicate knowledge of maritime history and heritage. \nArranged chronologically\, the exhibition will comprise five phases of the post-war maritime history: “Regeneration (1945-1948)”\, “Back in Business (1949-1970)”\, “The High Growth Years (1960s-1980s)”\, “The Container Changed Everything (1972-present)”\, and “The Future”. Starting with the display of a World War II bomb excavated in Happy Valley\, the exhibition will invite audiences on a journey from the destruction to the rebirth of the city\, made possible by the resilience of the maritime and Hong Kong communities. Collective memories of the community are told through exhibits such as ‘Made in Hong Kong’ products\, artefacts\, personal memorabilia and historical photography on seafarers\, Star Ferry\, dockyards\, and container terminals. These examples illustrate the crucial role of shipping in our daily lives in the past\, present and future. Highlights will include the display of a Star Ferry turnstile that had been used as a faregate in the 20th century; the oil painting of Seawise Giant (later renamed Jahre Viking)\, the world’s largest ship ever built that cemented the city’s role as the centre of ship management operations; and an outdoor display of the only remaining ‘Dai Fei’ (speedboat) in existence\, captured by the Hong Kong Marine Police and used for training purposes until the end of 2020. Altogether\, these items attest to Hong Kong’s growing presence on the global maritime stage. The exhibition will conclude with a forward-looking section dedicated to sustainability while celebrating Hong Kong’s spirit of resilience and vitality\, signified by the silver medal won by swimmer Siobhán Bernadette Haughey at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. \nDelivering a new immersive experience through the fusion of art and technology\, visitors will be guided through the exhibition by a fictional character named Carmen So featured in a series of five short movies by Hong Kong-based filmmaker Heiward Mak\, starring Yatho Wong\, Alma Kwok\, Nancy Kwai\, Sing Lam\, Miu Shan Tai and Mr. Jan as the leads. Through the eyes of the fictional Hongkonger in her twenties\, the movies weave stories of love and family with the maritime developments in the city and highlight our everyday connections with the maritime world. Moreover\, the exhibition will feature interactive elements\, including a motion-sensing game based on the Shikumisen finance system which was used by shipowners during the post-war period and an interactive projection wall about green shipping\, as well as a virtual reality experience to view and locate bombs in Hong Kong during the World War II. \n“The vision of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum is to be the custodian of ocean-related history and heritage to the Hong Kong community. 2022 is a year of transformation for the museum\, as we expand our offerings to include science\, fusing it with history and art to provide the public with a crossover learning experience. Hong Kong’s Maritime Miracle: The Story of our City since 1945 is a prime example of how we enhance awareness of important maritime history through a blend of art and technology\,” said Prof. Joost Schokkenbroek\, Museum Director of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. “In addition\, the brand-new Swire Marine Discovery Centre will open at the museum later this year\, which will enable us to further engage the community by offering multi-purpose venues for dialogues\, research and public programmes about maritime heritage and ecology. Fusing these elements makes a lot of sense. I believe that maritime history\, shipping\, marine science and ecology are very much intertwined. SUMMARY:Hong Kong Maritime Museum Family Fun Day
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Hong Kong Maritime Week 2021\, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) will present a family fun day with free admission on 31 October 2021. A series of activities will be offered for children and their families to enjoy and learn more about the industry and maritime history in Hong Kong. \nThe Hong Kong Maritime Week is organised by the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board\, together with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association. In partnership with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and InvestHK\, a week of maritime activities in physical\, online and hybrid formats will be held from 31 October to 6 November 2021. \nThe museum’s free family fun day opens the fifth edition of the Hong Kong Maritime Week on 31 October 2021\, funded by the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF)\, Transport and Housing Bureau HKSAR. Led by renowned children’s storyteller Choi EE and sponsored by the Swire Group Charitable Trust\, storytelling sessions are offered to the visitors to discover the link between maritime history and daily life. Supported by the HUD Group\, visitors will be able to participate in guided tours led by seafarers on the Group’s newest multipurpose tugboat Sung Kong to see its deck\, engine room\, crew quarters and galley. Seats are limited in these activities and advanced registration is required. \nOn 31 October 2021\, visitors can join freely in a myriad of family activities\, including screenings of three animated movies\, Finding Nemo\, Finding Dory and Moana\, guided tours led by seafarers around the museum\, and a visit to the special exhibition by the Hong Kong Seamen’s Union on the history of the Union and the work of seafarers. Visitors can capture the joyful memories of the day at the photobooth with the event mascot Captain Shiba\, and receive souvenirs and children’s activity worksheets. \nThe museum’s special exhibition Sailor-Made: Manifestations of Nautical Fashion in Hong Kong Culture is also on show. Visitors can learn about how nautical clothing has been adopted\, appropriated\, and reflected in mainstream fashions and global pop culture.
