SUMMARY:Silken Notes of the Pipa
DESCRIPTION:The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra opens its 49th concert season with Silken Notes of the Pipa\, a programme inspired by the cultural exchanges along the ancient and modern Silk Road. Throughout history\, plucked string instruments played in a “cradled” position like the pipa have flourished across diverse cultural landscapes\, giving rise to a burgeoning repertoire of musical narratives that offers virtual sights and sounds of exotic lands. \nThis Chinese orchestral suite is structured in seven movements\, each highlighting the expressive qualities and tonal characteristics of various “cradled” plucked-string instruments\, from the five-string and four-string pipa of China\, to the satsuma-biwa and shakuhachi of Japan\, with guest appearance by Cypriot oud virtuoso Giannis Koutis. SUMMARY:WestK x Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra: Free Reed Sounds
DESCRIPTION:This February\, join the musicians of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and mark the end of the Lunar New Year festivities with an evening of contemporary pieces demonstrating the versatility of the sheng. \nOne of the oldest musical instruments in China\, the sheng – a mouth-blown free-reed gourd instrument with multiple bamboo pipes – has a distinctive\, expressive sound. Often used as an accompaniment to Chinese opera performances and festivals\, the sheng is rarely played as a solo instrument and there are few compositions created specifically for sheng players. \nIn this concert\, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra sheng ensemble presents a diverse repertoire of solo and ensemble pieces composed by Principal Sheng Chen Yi-Wei and other musicians – showcasing the evocative sounds of this traditional instrument and highlighting the vibrant talents of a new generation of sheng musicians.
