SUMMARY:Hannes Minnaar’s 24 Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues
DESCRIPTION:In 1950\, Dmitri Shostakovich began composing the bold and enigmatic 24 Preludes and Fugues\, Op. 87\, amidst waves of pressure from the Soviet Power. This monumental work\, believed to be inspired by J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier\, embodies not only Shostakovich’s masterful contrapuntal artistry but also the profound exploration of his complex inner turmoil. \nMarking the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s passing\, pianist Hannes Minnaar will present this tour de force in a three-hour recital\, delving into “all steps of the scale and the human mind” (NRC). As the first Dutchman featured in the Royal Concertgebouw’s Master Pianists Series in 20 years\, Minnaar will demonstrate his remarkable stamina and artistry. He will infuse the performance with “depth\, optimism\, gloom\, strength\, and subtlety” (Pianist Magazine)\, creating a rich tapestry of emotions inherent in this monumental work.

SUMMARY:Schubert’s 12 Piano Sonatas with Paul Lewis
DESCRIPTION:“Schubert’s completed piano sonatas take us on a unique and heart-wrenching journey through the last 12 years of his life. From the charming lyricism of the early sonatas to the transcendent creativity of the late masterpieces\, via harrowing moments of despair as his health started to decline. His sonatas express with directness and sincerity some of the most fundamental elements of human experience—longing\, consolation\, despair\, joy\, loss\, nostalgia\, and hope. In our time\, his music is as essential and poignant as ever.” —Paul Lewis \nBritish pianist Paul Lewis is “one of today’s finest exponents of Schubert\, noted for his clarity of tone and simplicity of interpretation” (The New York Times). After the highly acclaimed recital in 2019\, he returns to HKU MUSE with a set of 11 completed sonatas\, along with the unfinished yet celebrated ‘Reliquie’ sonata (D. 840)\, in 4 concerts across 2 seasons. Join us and begin this incredible Schubertian journey! \n27 JAN 2024 | SAT | 8PM \n28 JAN 2024 | SUN | 3PM

SUMMARY:Of Roots and Ways: A Tribute to Maestro Doming Lam
DESCRIPTION:Adopting the creed “search for roots in tradition\, find ways in the avant-garde”\, composer Doming Lam was a maverick pioneer\, and one of the very few among his generation of Chinese musicians to have earned an entry in the authoritative Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. By way of five chamber works from different stages of his creative career\, this concert traces the path that the maestro pursued in modernising Chinese music over a span of half of a century.

SUMMARY:Limitless Limitations: Ligeti 100
DESCRIPTION:György Ligeti (1923-2006) was one of the most celebrated avant-garde composers in the latter half of the 20th century. \nOn the occasion of Ligeti’s centenary\, we present four of his chamber gems: Sonata for Solo Cello (1948/1953) is a Hungarian diptych that combines love-struck lyricism with whimsical virtuosity; Musica ricercata (1951-1953) and String Quartet No. 2 (1968) represent the master’s penchant to deny tradition and yet allowing it to be acknowledged through hints and allusions; the miniature tour-de-force Continuum (1968) exploits the dexterity of the harpsichordist and the technical possibilities of the instrument to the fullest. Hong Kong’s own harpsichordist Stephen Hung\, pianist Rachel Cheung\, cellist Pun Chak-yin\, and Cong Quartet will join forces in bringing these masterpieces to HKU MUSE audience\, with select clips of Ligeti’s own words as atmospheric interludes.
