SUMMARY:Yasmine Anlan Huang and Lean Lui: Strait is the Gate
DESCRIPTION:Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to present “Strait is the Gate\,” a two-person show by Yasmine Anlan Huang and Lean Lui at the Institut’s Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio from September 26 to October 26\, 2024. \n“What is something that is utterly hopeless\, yet can forever remain in one’s heart?” Inheriting André Gide’s inward questioning\, the juxtaposition of dreamy yet fragile metaphors and traces of violence often take center stage in the narratives of Lui and Huang. Exemplifying an approach influenced by Daoism\, Lui’s signature visual style comprises exaggerated close-up shots and meticulously arranged mundane objects. Meanwhile\, Huang employs a similarly delicate method\, drawing inspiration from global news and poetic verses to unveil the interplay of geopolitical conflicts and urban anxieties. Through the portrayal of ethereal yet emotionally enigmatic young girls\, the two artists examine pre-existing power structures and the stereotypical perception of vulnerability\, invoking a pursuit of themes such as truth and courage in everyday life.

SUMMARY:KINO/23 German Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to KINO/23\, the German Film Festival in Hong Kong and Macau! \nThis is the 25th edition of the German Film Festival\, which was first held in 1998 under the name MAX! \nThis year we are once again showing a great choice of excellent new films from Germany: New German Cinema is marked by a strong presence of female directors\, from the intense sibling drama “Kiss my Wounds” by Hanna Doose to Anita Decker’s quirky comedy “Love Things”. Among the German Masters\, you’ll find Fatih Akin’s million-viewer success “Rheingold” as well as Christoph Hochhäusler’s emotional drama “Till the End of the Night\,” which premiered at the Berlinale. \nAnd we take a look Behind the Wall: For our wonderful opening film “In a Land That No Longer Exists”\, we are pleased to welcome director Aelrun Goette in person for an audience talk. \nThe Goethe-Institut Hongkong celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion\, we invite you to re-encounter some of the great names of German cinema in the series Six Decades – Six Iconic Films\, including Konrad Wolf\, Wim Wenders and Tom Tykwer. Their films capture the spirit of an era and have become classics.

SUMMARY:The Stories Behind Art Book Publishers
DESCRIPTION:What is an art book? Is it simply an expensive\, extravagant coffee table book? Is it a printed exhibition catalogue that one can buy at galleries? Are there more to explore behind each exquisitely printed art book? For example\, what is it like to work in an art book publishing house? How do you work with the most creative minds from different art fields? What is the division of labor between editorial\, production\, and sales & marketing like? What are the challenges lying all along the road and ahead? \nOn 9th June\, we are happy to have Frankie Ho\, the retail director of TASCHEN\, a leading art-book publisher from Germany\, and Mary Chan\, the founder of MCCM Creations\, an art-book publisher in Hong Kong\, to share their perspective and insight after working in the field for more than twenty years. \nThe Talk is an accompanying programme to the exhibition GERMAN PHOTOBOOK PRIZE 21/22.

SUMMARY:The Female Gaze
DESCRIPTION:Is there a female gaze in art? \nSix female artists from Berlin and Leipzig have been invited to share their gaze with us. In their paintings and sculptures\, they explore body images and sensuality\, address relationships and memories\, and question traditional as well as contemporary gender roles. \nThe 26 selected artworks are strong\, as diverse as they are humorous\, and result in a kaleidoscope of female identities that confidently confronts the gaze of our world. \nFor this exhibition\, five female painters and one sculptress from Berlin and Leipzig were selected\, some of whom can be assigned to the environment of the so-called New Leipzig School. All of the artists involved here have been honored with solo exhibitions and prizes and have been shown internationally. \nFor Hong Kong\, this selection of representative female positions of contemporary art from Germany is a premiere. \nAs one of the program highlights for the 60th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Hong Kong\, the exhibition THE FEMALE GAZE will open on March 21\, 2023 during Art Basel Hong Kong and will then be on view at the gallery of the Goethe-Institut Hongkong until May 13.

SUMMARY:Stellar Moments of Humankind: The World of Stefan Zweig in Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) and the Goethe-Institut Hongkong co-present Stellar Moments of Humankind: The World of Stefan Zweig in Cinema at the Louis Koo Cinema\, Hong Kong Arts Centre from 21 to 24 July 2022. \nAs the human race straddles an unprecedented pandemic\, hostile divisions and conflicts\, fake news (and real news) and digital opportunism\, we also discover new strengths and beauty of moral courage and perseverance. This programme celebrates the Austrian master of literature\, Stefan Zweig (1881 – 1942)\, who is famed for his steadfast pacifism\, insistence on vaster understanding and intricate reading on passion and desire. \nZweig experienced two world wars. As a famous Jewish-Austrian writer\, Zweig’s books were censored\, vilified and destroyed by the Nazi in the 1930s and 1940s. He left his hometown\, Vienna\, to escape German persecution\, living in England and America before settling in his final destination\, Brazil. When Zweig was in exile\, a journalist asked how the writer thought of Germany\, he answered\, “I will make no prophecy. I would not speak against Germany. I would never speak against any country.” \nZweig’s work has served as the basis of many film adaptations and inspirations. This programme introduces seven outstanding cinematic works that are based on his life and work – from his time (Angst by Hans Steinhoff) to the present (German Film Award-winning The Royal Game by Philipp Stölzl). There will be a special talk by Andreas Dahn\, the visual effects artist of The Grand Budapest Hotel (dir. Wes Anderson). \nCoinciding with the 80th anniversary of Zweig’s demise\, this programme continues to celebrate his idealism – for he also created stellar literary moments for his past\, present and future followers.
