The azure hue, a nostalgic tribute to youthful exuberance and reverence for Pablo Picasso’s genius, courses through the exhibition’s veins. “Attraction” beckons the viewer to revel in Watanabe’s oeuvre, akin to the playful engagement with amusement park rides, while simultaneously stirring memories of cherished individuals and transformative moments.
Born in Tokyo during the vibrant tapestry of 1981, Watanabe’s artistic journey unfurled to fruition with a Master’s Degree in painting from Musashino Art University. His solo exhibitions, gracing the hallowed halls of Tomio Koyama Gallery and Maki Fine Arts, resonate with discerning audiences. Noteworthy group showcases, including the Fuchu Biennial and “Syncopation: Contemporary Encounters with the Modern Masters” at the Pola Museum of Art, have further solidified his artistic presence. The public collection of zozo, Inc. proudly houses Watanabe’s remarkable creations.

His canvases unfold, revealing teenage figures, their countenances adorned with patchwork visages and bodies adorned with multiple limbs or intriguing absences. A harmonious blend of realism and whimsy infuses these creatures, radiating a heroic luminescence amid dramatic tableaux. Watanabe’s layered technique, akin to the strata of a digital realm, breathes life into the canvas, evoking a sense of cubist mystique and the divine grace of multifaceted Buddha statues. Like a mirror reflecting one’s innermost awareness, each stroke of his brush kindles self-reflection and contemplation.

Watanabe’s artistic process, rooted in the artistry of layering, yields surfaces imbued with texture, subtle chromatic shifts, and palpable depth. His creative wellspring draws inspiration from the vibrant era of Japanese manga magazines that captivated his youth. It was within those pages, from the likes of Weekly Shonen Jump, Magazine, and Sunday, that he meticulously copied the iconic characters, honing his craft. Concurrently, art classes became a sanctuary for his boundless creativity, where he fashioned myriad works of art. The allure of Buddhist statues ignited his curiosity, leading him to delve into their myriad forms, sculpting clay and wood carvings that now underpin his contemporary practice. Musashino Art University further nurtured his artistic growth, immersing him in the rich tapestry of art history and honing his skills through the imitation of historical forms.

In the wake of his stellar debut at the esteemed Tomio Koyama Gallery, Watanabe’s artistic odyssey expanded to encompass revered art museums, enriching his creative acumen. Notably, the Pola Museum of Art bestowed upon him the opportunity to showcase his works alongside revered luminaries such as Pablo Picasso and Paul Cezanne, an experience that illuminated his path forward.
