Wei wei, anybody home? reimagines Hong Kong’s cultural identity through everyday objects. Featuring works by three prominent local artists—Angel Hui Hoi Kiu, Giraffe Leung Lok Hei, and Cassandra Lau Po Yan—the show transforms everyday items into profound statements on heritage, value, and belonging.
The exhibition’s title poses a resonant question about identity and place, challenging viewers to consider what “home” means in a city where Eastern and Western influences constantly intertwine. Each artist uses their distinct medium to dissect this complex relationship, creating a dialogue between traditional aesthetics and contemporary life.
Angel Hui Hoi Kiu presents Auntie Angel’s Store, a captivating installation that reimagines an old-style convenience store. She meticulously adorns everyday Western snacks and drink packaging with traditional Chinese blue-and-white porcelain patterns. This fusion creates a visual metaphor for the hybrid nature of Hong Kong’s identity, where global consumer culture is seamlessly integrated with deep-rooted Chinese artistic traditions.
Giraffe Leung Lok Hei showcases his significant “Coin Series.” In this body of work, Leung uses coins—universal symbols of value and exchange—as his canvas. By etching, stamping, or assembling them, he investigates themes of economic flux, social value, and personal history within the city’s capitalist landscape. The series prompts a reflection on what society truly values and how those values are imprinted on the most mundane objects of daily life.
Cassandra Lau Po Yan continues her exploration of Hong Kong’s urban and domestic spaces. Her textural paintings delve into the architecture of home, capturing the unique light, density, and communal spirit of the city’s housing estates. Her work evokes a strong sense of nostalgia and belonging, framing the city itself as a sprawling, complex home for its inhabitants.
Wei wei, anybody home? is characterized by its innovative use of familiar materials. Hui’s blue-and-white snack packages sit in conversation with Leung’s altered currency, together questioning the cultural and economic forces that shape local identity. Lau’s paintings provide the architectural and emotional backdrop to this dialogue, grounding the exhibition in the physical spaces Hong Kong people call home.
