Tracing the boundary-defying romance between a scholar and a nun, The Story of the Jade Hairpin is an ode to youth, love and freedom, and a staple in the traditional Kunqu repertoire since the Ming dynasty. Over the centuries, this beloved classic about two fearless young lovers has inspired countless interpretations – among them, the adaptation by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe stands out with its innovative approach and modern sensibility.
In this upcoming Hong Kong performance, award-winning Kunqu artists Hu Weilu and Luo Chenxue take on the lead roles with renewed vitality and resonance, allowing the enduring brilliance of this cherished gem to captivate a new generation of audiences.
While staying with his aunt, the head of a nunnery, young scholar Pan falls in love with Chen, a novice nun. After much inner conflict, Chen finds the courage to break free from religious constraints and agrees to marry him. However, when Pan’s aunt discovers the affair and fears disgrace upon her institution, she sends Pan away to take the imperial exam. In a tearful farewell, Chen gives Pan her jade hairpin as a parting gift and a symbol of their vow.
