Roy Cheng: Candid Reflections

Throughout his journey as an artist, Roy Cheng has created basketball-themed oil paintings, most of which featured basketball stars in the 90s and millenniums, because those are the players he liked when he was first introduced to basketball as a child. His works are therefore filled with memories and emotions.

Nowadays we are flooded by a vast amount of information daily, and many new things that we encounter may be forgotten and eliminated in a blink of an eye. However, Roy still believes that anything genuine and classic will stand the test of time and never fade away.

Roy Cheng, a Hong Kong local artist, has fallen in love with basketball and NBA since the Chicago Bulls golden era in the 1990s.

Since he childhood days, Roy has been passionate about painting. During his school years, he set aside his interest in painting to focus on his studies, and upon graduation, he joined the workforce like any other person. At work, his encounters with various groups in society have paved the way for his future creative path.

At the age of 26, he decided to quit his job of many years to pursue his dream of painting. Despite his grassroots upbringing, Roy built on his talent by pouring in hard work to polish his painting skills and artistic connotations. He did what he truly loves, whilst constantly improving, going over and beyond to achieve self-realization.

Roy Cheng creates oil paintings with NBA players as the main theme, capturing his profound sentiments for the players in each artsy brush-stroke. Taking inspiration from the striving experiences and dedication of the players, he expresses the spirit of sportsmanship through oil paintings, triggering emotions from basketball fans and viewers alike. Since 2019, he has been invited to bring along his paintings to meet with various NBA stars. The stars were immensely impressed by Roy's painting skills.

At the end of 2020, Roy published his first collection of personal works "The Relentless Souls: Portraits of NBA Stars" and won the Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Award. Later, he also cooperated with the NBA2K game series, XXL NBA magazine, and InspiringHK Sports Foundation. His works were recognized and appreciated by the audience, all of which became the driving force for Roy's creation.
