EVENT DESCRIPTION
Returning to Hong Kong for his second solo exhibition, Rockin’Jelly Bean presents ‘耀’ at Quiet Gallery in Belowground. Interpreting the word “glory”, the exhibition showcases 45 prints and 14 original drawings in a mix of both new and previous pieces, alongside works that are out of print.
Inspired by the classic magazine Playboy, which he discovered as a teenager, the artist is known for his lascivious depictions, heavily influenced by cartoon and manga, notably of women with ‘cute’ faces that contrast against their sexy, curvaceous figures. Music and art form an inseparable bond in his life – as a former bassist in the band Jackie and The Cedrics, his artistic career began by drawing the brand’s performance leaflets and album covers.
Growing up between the USA and Japan, it was when he was living in Los Angeles as an adult where he was exposed to the works of Robert Williams and Lowbrow art, an art movement which had not yet been defined at the time. Currently based in Tokyo, Rockin’Jelly Bean has expanded into other creative fields of fashion and toys as his artworks started to garner attention in both Japan and overseas.
Alongside the prints and original works, a limited-edition series of merchandise, including t-shirts and skateboards, will also be available for purchase during the exhibition period. To mark the opening of the exhibition, the artist made a personal appearance in Hong Kong for a signing session on 15th April, along with his two personal mascots, the Jelly Bean Girls.
ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Born in Hawaii, USA, Rockin’Jelly Bean grew up surrounded by American culture before moving back to Kyoto and absorbing Japanese aesthetics. A combination of eastern and western characteristics came to define his thinking. Talented at drawing since he was a child, reading the classic erotic magazine Playboy for the first time in middle school would cement his fascination with sexy female forms and inspire him to use it as the basis for his work. Currently based in Tokyo, with the growing popularity of his work, Rockin’Jelly Bean became active in various fields, founding his own brand EROSTY POP, launching a series of toys with Medicom and starting his own personal image licensing brand.
