Once Upon A Time

18 January - 5 May

EVENT DESCRIPTION

At the outset of 2025, the Power Station of Art launches two exhibitions as part of its “Collection Series”: “The Enduring Rhythm of Vitality,” the solo exhibition of artist Hsia Yan, and “Once Upon a Time,” a group exhibition of 16 individual/group artists. “Once Upon a Time” features Shanghai-based artists who narrate stories of different eras within the same place through their diverse artistic languages. Their works are both enduring memories and extensions of their lives and consciousness.

The exhibition features works by Yu Youhan, Li Shan, Hu Xiangcheng, Zhou Xiaohu, Zhou Tiehai, Lu Chunsheng, Yang Zhenzhong, Yang Fudong, Xu Zhen, Zhang Ding, Yin Yi, Birdhead, Zhang Xiaochuan, Cui Jie, Lin Ke, Hu Weiyi, revealing the intricate bond between the hidden individual and the city. The space is no longer defined by stable coordinates but has become a geographical concept endowed with spirituality.

Deeply rooted in Shanghai — some born and raised here, others settled in city after studying here at a young age — these artists, regardless of their places of origin, share a common destiny intertwined with Shanghai’s ever-changing cityscape. They traveled through the hopeful turn of the millennium and were welcomed by the globalized Shanghai Expo. In a multipolar world, they experienced moments of pro(re)gress and renewed striving. Never aligning themselves through collective identities, they express through the keen lens of art the bewilderment and confusion of individuals witnessing the changes of the times and the city, while embodying an enduring commitment to their ideals.

“PSA Collection Series” will gradually evolve alongside its collection, exploring hidden yet vibrant cases in art history, while bringing together diverse reflections and practices.
