EVENT DESCRIPTION

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present Missed Calls, a group exhibition featuring the works of Hong Kong based Japanese artist, TAXA & Hong Kong artist, ZLISM, alongside South African artists, Ross Turpin & Resoborg.

As the four artists come together in the city having been over 10,000 km apart, their reunion prompts them to respond to the missed calls from one another, then to nature’s unanswered calls through art. Along with their distinct experiences that come from their diverse backgrounds, they unravel vibrant narratives inspired by the spirit and soul of their familiar land, intertwining wildlife with cityscapes, bridging the distance across continents.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Ross Turpin is a mixed-media artist and Tattoo’er from South Africa. Landed in Hong Kong in 2010. He is a Previous owner of Star Crossed Tattoo.

Turpin’s artworks are developed through his love of illustration, he is prolific in his experimentation and always willing to reinvent his process. Turpin explains “ In my latest works I try to discover the primal connections that unite us all”. His limited pallet and purposefull application give the works a sense of universal understanding, they are somehow completely unique whilst being deeply recognisable.

Resoborg is a South African based artist, illustrator, and muralist. Having over a decade of experience working across the globe, he draws inspiration from his travels and creates unique perspectives in his work. His engagement with the natural environment always lies at the heart of his art. Through the abstract nature in his work, he explores themes of metamorphosis and continuity, at the same time conveying his distinctive voice and message through his mastery in manipulating colour and shape. He has collaborated with global brands while his mural commissions include his work for Durban International Airport and Queens College in New York.

TAXA is an award-winning Japanese artist based in Hong Kong. He won the Hong Kong Vans Asia Custom Culture competition and has painted for high-profile international street art festivals. His works are not only shaped by his exposure to diverse cultures since childhood but also by his fascination with both traditional and contemporary Japanese art styles. TAXA has recently been commissioned to paint the mural for Soho House’s Pop Up Bar at Art Central 2024, and has created murals and artworks for over countless brands and corporations.

ZLISM is a Hong Kong based artist. She has created the imaginary planet Zlism, with “ZL” stands for her initials while “LISM” stands for her philosophy and ideas.
