EVENT DESCRIPTION
Sponsored by The Star Ferry Company Limited and Stay Bar, we are delighted to present Light Across Time, co-organised by Reese Chang and Caroline Chu, opening on 19 September 2026 aboard the Shining Star Ferry. Featuring four Hong Kong artists—Justin Hui, Simon Liu, Daphné Mandel, and Angela Yuen—each with a distinct approach to remembrance, the group exhibition brings together fragments of history, culture, and memory amid the city’s rapid transformation. Through light and moving images, the works bridge past and present, inviting viewers to reimagine and re-experience moments of collective memory.
This site-specific exhibition transforms the historic vessel into a space for reflection and exchange across generations. What begins as a daily ritual of crossing becomes an opportunity for quiet contemplation, transforming the ferry into a suspended space where different temporalities intersect. Challenging linear narratives of time, each work prompts viewers to consider how, in an era of constant flux, Hong Kong’s cultural memory continues to shape new possibilities for our collective future.
Requires a 98 HKD minimum drink purchase as part of the onboarding experience. Participants receive a voucher for one of three complimentary drinks on the scheduled day.
The vessel will remain stationary throughout the exhibition.
ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Angela Yuen graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014. In 2016, she was an artist-in-residence at Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. Yuen’s practice focuses on urban culture and the theme of “Neighbourhood”. She highlights the symbolic significance of found objects, transforming them into her own artistic language. Responding to Hong Kong’s rapid urban development and its ever-evolving physical and social environment, Yuen collects manufactured objects to rediscover the sense of human warmth she experienced growing up in the city. “Neighbourhood” is not only a recurring theme in her practice, but is also deeply embedded in her creative process.Daphné Mandel has lived and worked in Hong Kong since 2008. She received her degree in landscape architecture in Versailles in 2000. Mandel explores transitional landscapes at the edges of Hong Kong, combining contemporary digital techniques with traditional methods such as painting and collage. Her practice captures the city’s dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity, weaving together collective memories and the ever-evolving identity of Hong Kong. Her works have been exhibited at international art fairs, including Art Basel Hong Kong, Taipei Dangdai, ART021 and West Bund Shanghai. She is represented by Gallery EXIT in Hong Kong.
Justin Hui is an artist and architect whose practice explores memory, archives, and spatial reconstruction. Working across model-making, photography, film, and installation, Hui’s practice often combines forensic research with narrative and visual inquiry to reconstruct spaces that are fragmented, absent, or imagined, examining how physical environments can hold and reshape collective memory. His ongoing work includes New Territories 界, which examines Hong Kong’s evolving northern landscapes and notions of territory, development, and historical legacies. He has exhibited at the 2022 Venice Architecture Biennale, the 2023 Jimei x Arles Chinese Contemporary Photobook Exhibition, and the 2024 Hong Kong International Photo Festival.
Simon Liu is a filmmaker and artist whose practice spans film, installation, and performance. His practice continually rethinks how moving images can operate in space, shifting from cinematic viewing toward immersive, spatial, and time-based experiences. His work explores memory, perception, and the fragmentation of time, often combining documentary elements with abstract visual structures to create layered and non-linear narratives. His work has been widely presented at major international institutions and festivals, including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, M+, and the New York Film Festival.
