EVENT DESCRIPTION

Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board Youth Academy and The Education University of Hong Kong (EDUHK), the exhibition “Journey to West Kowloon Community Art Exhibition” invites 520 students from primary, secondary and university school students and youth organisations from within and outside the West Kowloon neighbourhood to participate, with its theme centres on the West Kowloon district, including Yau Ma Tei, Jordan and the West Kowloon Cultural District.

“Journey to West Kowloon Community Art Exhibition” is a journey of discovery. The word “West” in the Chinese title refers to the West Kowloon neighbourhood, and the word “Oil” represets the medium oil and art, resembling the creative journey to archive the district in the eyes of the students through artistic creation. A group of young people were given a guided tour of the community to gain a better understanding of the history and culture of the district. It is then followed by a series of creative workshops organised by EDUHK student teachers, including cyanotype printing, mosaics, neon signs, and collage workshops to represent the culture of the West Kowloon community as seen by primary and secondary school students. The primary school group has endeavoured much effort using small mosaics to create the entire picture of the community, while the secondary school group uses cyanotype printing to encompass the warmth of the community and to introduce the audience the ancient and modern architecture, local traditional culture and arts and crafts of these two communities.

In addition to the works created by primary and secondary school students, the exhibition also shows the works of students from the Department of Creative Arts and Culture of EDUHK. Over the past six months, the students have travelled around the streets and the old and new local stores of Jordan, Yau Ma Tei and the West Kowloon Cultural District for inspiration and created different types of artwork, including paintings, sculptures, installation art, photography, and multimedia artworks, individually or in groups. All worksfully capture the unique culture of the community and create a meaningful narrative. During the exhibition period, students will also act as docents to interact with the audience and perform live music.

This community art event brings together a group of young people to realise the concept of “Learning Together, Creating Together, Sharing Together”, with over 250 pieces of artworks on display. We cordially invite you to come enjoy theartworks and to appreciate the unique life and cultural characteristics of the West Kowloon district as seen by the students.
