ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Javier Gonzalez Burgos (b. 1974, Rosario, Argentina) is a world-renowned illustrator currently living in Costa Del Sol, Andalucía, Spain. In the early 2000s, he started to collect picture books and eventually became an illustrator himself. Over the years, he has illustrated more than 120 books, while his works were published and exhibited in Mexico, Spain, Chile, USA, France, Canada, Germany, UK, Costa Rica, Colombia, China and Hong Kong. Some of them are currently part of the Fratelli Branca permanent art collection.

Conceiving his creations more than just paintings or illustrations, Burgos has turned his subject characters into real figures for many exhibitions, and even collectible toy figures. His exhibitions were well received by the public, including the significant themed exhibition, Adventures in Forest, held in Beijing in 2014, which was the first of its kind in the capital city of China and a Latin-style landscape that was unprecedented in Asia.

Given his background, Burgos’ works are eminently inspired by the fairy world from the children's illustration books. Through depicting his beautiful and innovative characters as children in animal-like costumes, he shows his great empathy for wildlife and animals and implies the constantly tense relations between human and other living beings on Earth. As he stated, “creatures need to swim into a fiberglass boat; tears in their eyes come from sadness but also smog; they have learned to do human things like playing music or imitating others by disguising, or even modifying their bodies because they need to survive, day after day, like we all have to, too.” Burgos encourages the viewer to take a close look at his art and reflecton how brutal the reality is when industrialisation has tremendously affected the lives of all living creatures.
