GuoGuang Opera Company: The Dream of an Embroidered Robe and Excerpts from Peony Pavilion

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Blending Kunqu, Japanese traditional music, Nihon-buyō, traditional puppetry and contemporary stage elements, The Dream of an Embroidered Robe reimagines the tragic tale of Zheng Yuanhe and Li Yaxian.

The experimental cross cultural performance – the result of a three-year collaboration between leading regional troupes GuoGuang Opera Company and Yokohama Noh Theater – features music composed by shamisen master Mozibei Tokiwazu V, lyrics by Masayuki Nakamura, former artistic director of Yokohama Noh Theatre, and acclaimed Kunqu actors Wen Yu-hang and Liu Chia-hou in the lead roles. The production is presented as a double-bill that opens with two excerpts from the Kunqu classic Peony Pavilion in their original form.
