Cho Wing Ki & Lau Yin Yeung: Between Gaze and Mist
2 August 2025 - 13 September 2025
FreeEVENT DESCRIPTION
SC Gallery presents Between Gaze and Mist, the duo exhibition of Cho Wing Ki and Lau Yin Yeung featuring their latest body of works. The two artists share distinctive lifestyles and artistic expression. For this exhibition, they interpret everyday lives through their own unique lenses, exploring the relationship between them and the external environment.
In this exhibition, Cho’s observations of the external environment stem from a personal viewpoint: watching the rain with dogs at home, accompanying children to sketch the landscape afar, and a swimmer looking at the sea from the shade. The perspective of her paintings extends from “interior” to “exterior,” guiding the audience to step into the painting. Gazing at the distant scenery, as if a new world awaits.
Lau’s artworks primarily feature local landscapes. Ranging from nature to the narrow streets of Hong Kong, mountains and clouds, boats, or man-made objects at street corners, are all subjects of his work. The artist has delved into Buddhist philosophy in recent years, contemplating that thematic coherence is not the priority of his creation. Instead, he believes that seemingly unrelated subjects are all interconnected. Through painting, the transformation process of random images let him explore the origination of his surroundings; akin to a boat navigating through misty seas, seeking the ocean amid the waves.
ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Cho Wing-ki 曹穎褀 (b. 1989, Hong Kong) graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a degree in Fine Arts. Specializing in oil painting and print-making, her artistic practice mainly focuses on urban life and the people around her–to observe how they live their lives and figure out what roles she should play in her communities. She would like to share the power of drawing with the communities she cares about, and face life’s challenges together.Cho Wing Ki is also a member of Printhow, a local print-making collective.Lau Yin Yeung 劉彥揚 (b. 1993, Hong Kong) received a bachelor’s degree major in printing from RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School in 2017. Lau’s creative perspective revolves around his observations and feelings towards the streets and alleys of Hong Kong. Using oil painting as a medium, he records the scenery of his rurales walks on canvas. Natural landscapes and artificial objects appear simultaneously in Lau’s creations, creating a balanced state that brings a peaceful and spiritual space to the busy city. It is a place where viewers can pause and empty their minds.
