Cheon Woo-Sun: Fullness of Emptiness

9 October 2025 - 18 October 2025

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Soluna Fine Art proudly presents Korean metal craft artist Cheon Woo-Sun’s inaugural solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Fullness of Emptiness. Inspired by traditional Korean ceramics, Cheon reimagines the forms of bowls and vessels through the medium of metal and Ottchil (Korean lacquer).

Believing that the form of the vessel (器), which lies at the foundation of craft, truly embody his philosophy, Cheon introduces openings and gaps to this classic structure using metal wires. In his practice, each wire is meticulously welded, with the creation process approached as a three-dimensional sketch. By deconstructing forms into points and lines, each metal wire converges to form hollow planes, gradually shaping the overall piece.

His technique ensures a seamless flow in the sculpture from every angle. Regardless of the viewer’s perspective, a constant sense of movement and fluidity is maintained. This approach brings the work to life, offering a dynamic experience that encourages engagement from multiple viewpoints. Embodying the philosophy that “to fill, one must first empty,” Cheon’s Open Vase series invites viewers to contemplate the fundamental relationship between presence and absence.

Fullness of Emptiness will be on view at Soluna Fine Art from 9 to 18 October 2025.

Cheon Woo-Sun’s works will also be featured in Fine Art Asia 2025 from 4 to 7 October 2025.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Cheon Woo-Sun (b. 1976 in Seoul, Korea) obtained his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Metal Craft from Kyonggi University. Inspired by the shapes of traditional Korean ceramic jars from the Joseon period, Cheon welds long strips of metal and bends them to create various vessel forms. Each piece of wire is carefully welded and assembled in various directions to evoke a sense of movement and space. This linear experimentation is central to his work, requiring both technical mastery and a nuanced artistic sensibility. His skillful welding and finishing techniques transform cold metal into organic, flowing forms that evoke a rustic yet refined aesthetic. Throughout his career, Cheon has exhibited internationally at prominent fairs such as COLLECT, Tresor Contemporary Craft, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. His works are part of the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art Korea.
