Belgian Days 2025: WHO is WHERE? By MON COLONEL & SPIT

17 November - 23 November

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

As part of Belgian Days 2025, we are presenting a project that invites dialogue, exchange, and collective reflection around the question: “What differentiates us?

The exhibition will feature 44 glazed ceramic masks, each one is the result of a free and imaginative creation. Inspired by both folklore and pop culture, every mask is distinct in character. To humanize them further, each piece has been given a first name.

Half of the masks carry female names, the other half male names. These names have been selected from the 11 most commonly used first names in Belgium and in Hong Kong, creating a symbolic bridge between cultures.

The works will be displayed throughout the gallery, either individually or in groups. Visitors will be invited to playfully engage with the exhibition through a guide featuring photographs and names of the masks—reminiscent of “Guess Who?” or “Where’s Wally?

The challenge is to identify and locate each mask within the gallery space.

This project is conceived as intercultural, intergenerational, humorous, and playful, while emphasizing the importance of encounter, dialogue, and exchange with others.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

MON COLONEL & SPIT is a Belgian artist duo formed in 2007 by Eric Bassleer (b. 1974) and Thomas Stiernon (b. 1977), who live and work in Liège. Former graffiti artists in the 1990s under the crew "ERS", they transitioned into collaborative visual art following the group's dissolution. Their multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics, often brought together in immersive installations. Their work draws on everyday life, comics, and urban culture, infused with irony, humor, and playful irreverence. Through this lens, they reassemble fragments of pop culture and personal memory, offering a self-aware and subtly critical reflection on society. Their work has been featured in institutional exhibitions such as En piste! (Musée de la Boverie, 2023), Reload (MIMA Museum, Brussels, 2022), and LepidoptERA (BPS22, 2017). It is held in collections including FRAC Picardie (FR), MIMA Museum (BE), Province de Liège (BE), and the Royal Belgian Family.
