EVENT DESCRIPTION

HART, a not-for-profit art organisation, is delighted to present ARTionary, an exhibition that showcases artistic talents of 70 local students through the forms of photography, chinese ink, sculpture, installation, community art and street art. The showcase will be held on 19 to 28 May 2023 at HART Haus, Kennedy Town.

ARTionary encourages students to view the environment through artistic lenses. When ordinary items from everyday life can become inspiration, one can redefine the boundaries of creativity and create unimaginable works. With the guidance of 6 renowned local artists, a total of 70 high school students and recent college graduates participated in ARTaster – Art Co-learning Pilot Programme and co-created this showcase as a result. Mentors include CHUI Pui Chee (Chinese Ink), HO Siu Kee (Sculpture), LEE Wing Ki (Photography), LEUNG Mei Ping (Installation Art), WONG Tin Yan (Community Art), and Ricky YEUNG Sau Cheuk (Street Art).

Venturing to the neighbourhood in Sham Shui Po, Kennedy Town and creative spaces such as HART Haus, Form Society and Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre for inspiration, young artists developed their own definitions of art. With the guidance and art techniques provided by the mentors, young artists co-created unique art pieces via various mediums – some rediscovering the community in a new perspective, others conveying their personal thoughts and emotions.

Inspired by ordinary objects surrounding us, Team Sculpture created a series of sculptural works mimicking revolving lights from Shanghainese barber shops, pits, vintage Chinese windows – a true representation of Hong Kong. Formed by a compilation of items collected from street stalls in Sham Shui Po, House of Stuff showcases how our community is powered by local wisdom.

Comfort exemplates the journey of life – beginning with self-doubts, slowly finding your own way by paving the path, finally reaching your goal. Doll’s Eyes illustrates how humans judge one another with a simple glance, and how that glance can put pressure on another like the artist.

Each work not only carries young artists’ personal attachment to the society but also records their individual growth in the art creation journey. HART Founder Kristine Li said, “the definition of arts is beyond words. Our goal for this program is to inspire young artists to view their surroundings from an artistic perspective and express themselves through creating art. It will be delightful to make art creation and viewing a common practice.”

Launched in 2022, “ARTaster – Art Co-Learning Pilot Programme” invites students from local high schools to embark on a self-exploration and development journey through mentorship by experienced artists. In a world that values innovation and technology, art enables the new generation to build empathy and think from a human-centric perspective. By providing theory sessions and hands-on practices, the programme aims to cultivate students’ craftsmanship, aesthetic, creativity, collaboration and communication skills and promote all-rounded personality development.
