A Letter to Momo
EVENT DESCRIPTION
After losing her father in a marine accident, 11-year-old girl Momo is burdened with guilt as their last conversation ended with her saying ‘I don’t care if you come home or not.’ Soon after, Momo and her mother, Ikuko, move to their ancestral house on Shiojima, a small island that lies on Seto Inland Sea. Within the dusty attic, Momo unleashes from a folklore picture book three Yōkai—Iwa, Kawa, and Mame—who then guide her through a heartwarming journey of self-discovery and friendship.
The enchanted tale is complemented with animation hand-drawn by the renowned Production I.G, best known for its work on Ghost in the Shell (1995), the Neon Genesis Evangelion series (1997), and TV series Haikyu!! (2014-2020). A Letter to Momo participated in multiple film festivals such as Toronto International Film Festival, Japan Media Arts Festival, New York International Children’s Film Festival, and Fantasia International Film Festival, among others. With breathtaking animation, heartfelt storytelling, and a touch of whimsy, A Letter to Momo is an uplifting piece for families and younger audiences to submerge in the magical world of anime and embrace life’s extraordinary wonders.
The screening on 9 March 2024 will be conducted in a relaxed fashion where lights will remain half-dimmed, and the volume will be lowered for younger children’s comfort.
