EVENT DESCRIPTION

Freespace Dance 2025 presents innovative perspectives on the future of dance from artists in the Asia-Pacific region. Highlight performances include four exciting, new cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations:

Bridging Bridge, TS Crew (Hong Kong), contact Gonzo (Osaka) — A genre-defying cross-border dialogue about unity, division, and bridging divides in an increasingly polarised world through a high-energy and agile physical exchange. Commissioned by WestK Performing Arts.

No Time To Die: An Inert Liquid Assembly, Nadim Abbas (visual artist, Hong Kong), Chan Wai-lok (choreographer, Hong Kong) — An immersive cross-disciplinary installation and performance about fluidity and intangibleness in our era of information overload.

U>N>I>T>E>D, Chunky Move (Melbourne) — A bold and visually striking work offering an epic vision of machine mysticism and the persistence of spirituality in a post-industrial digital age.

Jungle, Korea National Contemporary Dance Company (Seoul) — A multi-layered contemplation on life and existence, where flawless technique and primal instinct coexist in a stage transformed into a living wilderness.

The festival also hosts two artistic sharing and knowledge exchange programmes: the FIRST Creation Platform for local independent dance artists to showcase and discuss their research and development ideas; and Future Dictionary, a platform and toolbox to unpack language and artistic practice for a shared future.

A vibrant line-up of fringe events completes the experience of Freespace Dance. Highlights include behind-the-scenes experiences for U>N>I>T>E>D, providing an exclusive look into its creative process; a professional workshop led by Chunky Move’s Artistic Director Antony Hamilton, where he shares the secret of his unique choreographic method; children and adults workshops hosted by TS Crew and contact Gonzo; and a professional workshop led by Kim Sungyong, Artistic Director of Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, sharing his unique movement research method for dancers and choreographers.

In addition, the festival presents Dance in the Times of Sustainability: Lecture and Workshop. Led by Louis Yu, founder and Executive Director of Hong Kong Culture and Sustainability Centre, art practitioners will explore the role of the arts and culture community in an era of climate change.
