$120 – $500

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Boasting a masterful blend of suspense, humour, and tenderness, The Daughter of the Horse-trader is one of Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe’s most iconic productions. The poignant story, based on the eponymous Ming dynasty novel, follows the trials of a humble merchant’s family, cast adrift by fate yet bound together by unshakable love and loyalty. Through the refined lens of Kunqu opera, it unfolds with heightened emotions and a profound sense of humanity.

The upcoming Hong Kong performance stars Li An and Shen Yili, two winners of the prestigious China Theatre Plum Blossom Award, as the central couple whose relentless pursuit of justice anchors the drama. The climactic scene “Writing the Petition”, a grand showcase of their finesse and intensity, is a must-see moment for xiqu lovers.

After her husband Zhao is appointed mayor, Li Guizhi unexpectedly learns that her long-lost father, a humble horse-trader, has been falsely accused of murder and imprisoned. Desperate to save him, she turns to Zhao, who petitions the High Commissioner on her behalf. United in love and purpose, the couple vows to leave no stone unturned to see justice served.
